Malone's in St Matthews

by Linda C » Mon Mar 22, 2010 11:40 pm

I just heard from a very secretive inside source that Malone's in Lexington is scheduled to open in the "Old Sears Building" where Wellspring used to be. I will not reveal my sources. What a gem that would be!!

The way the Malone's/Harry's brand is spreading around Lex, I've always wondered when they'd give Louisville shot.

The thought of a Harry's down in the Heart of St. Matts makes me :D

Malone's was our go-to spot for a steak when we lived in Lexington. They turn out good food in a good atmosphere.

I had heard it was going to be Burdorf's location next to 60 West not the old Sears building but I could be wrong. It certainly wouldn't be the first time.. Either way it will be a great addition to St. Matthews!

While their menu looks pretty good Louisville really has enough steak restaurants. We really need a couple of nice seafood restaurants. That's the one new restaurant cuisine we are really lacking in.

I just Googled it, and it was a chain! I didn't know that...I do remember it being good. Of course, I was little then.

Probably so. It was part of the Morrisons corporate family. Darn good place for a chain, too. At the time of its opening here (middle '80s?), it stood alone locally for fresh daily fish from a blackboard menu. Same corporate owner as Ruby Tuesday, and the two establishments stood at opposite corners of the North Hurstbourne shopping center that now houses Bombay Grill.

No connection with L&N Wine Bar, of course, which is Len and Nancy. 8)

We live in Lexington, very close to one of the Malone's locations. We've been to several of this group's (BHG, Bluegrass Hospitality Group) restaurants over the years (BHG owns or are associated with Malone's, Sal's, Harry's, and Regatta Seafood, among others), and we've never had better than a mediocre experience. We haven't been back to any of them in a while. The ingredients seem to be the same quality as those used at lower-priced chains (when comparing Malone's to Logan's Roadhouse, or Regatta with Red Lobster, for instance), but BHG's prices are much higher.

Here are some of my opinions about the food at Malone's and its siblings: the seafood at Regatta is prepared in a way that leaves it dry and flavorless; the steaks at Malone's seem identical to steaks that you can get at Applebee's or Logan's Roadhouse, but are much more expensive; side dishes and salads are afterthoughts (lots of wilty iceberg lettuce in the salads, dry & overcooked baked potatoes); poor beer and wine selection. Also: Aqua, Malone's in-house sushi bar, served the worst sushi that I have ever had, and that's including sushi purchased at grocery stores. Particularly offensive was the Tuna Lover's Roll: dry, spongy fish with a burnt flavor and a strange smell.

To be fair, I think that the atmosphere/ambience at BHG restaurants is much nicer than lower-priced chains in Lexington. The Malone's near my house has a lot of cool stuff on the wall, like UK Basketball pictures and autographs. But the recipes and food-quality seem poor to me. I'm convinced that the "bacon-wrapped filet medallions" ($21.95 at Malone's) are the same pre-packaged bacon-wrapped tenderloins that can be purchased at Kroger for sometimes as little as $2.99. When we want a steak in Lexington, we cook it at home or leave the city and go to Midway (Holly Hill Inn), or Louisville (Palermo Viejo). Also: Ted's Montana Grill (a chain, of course) in Lex has MUCH better steaks than Malone's, in my opinion.

""I had heard it was going to be Burdorf's location next to 60 West not the old Sears building but I could be wrong. It certainly wouldn't be the first time..""

Allen (owner of Burdorf's) always talked of renting the roof of Burdorf's to a restaurant. That is why they put in an elevator all the way up with an outside exit. It is a great view up there, and plenty of room for a beer garden.
