Former Big Dave's Outpost to reopen in June

by Marsha L. » Mon Mar 22, 2010 3:47 pm

I guess officially it's just a rumor, but I talked to the guy that used to be the chef at Big Dave's (he still lives above the space). Sean said it was going to re-open in June as "Highlands Bar & Grill". He couldn't remember the lessee's name, but thinks he owns gun shops or ranges around town.

I'm tired of seeing it sit there empty on the corner beside my apartment, so let's hope good things happen!

Baja Grill. Soundalike. :)

I have an advantage here, as in addition to being a Baby Boomer who grew up in Louisville, my father's parents owned the big yellow house at the corner of Speed (actually facing Ivanhoe Court) directly across the street. Waaaaaaay back in the day, it used to be a pharmacy. Dave somebody sticks in my head, but I wasn't really old enough to be sent over for a growler of beer or anything.

Alan, there was a time during Fat Cat's reign when there was an "industry party" in the apartment above every Monday night. I went to a few of those :)

Baja Bay! Right? Infact, I shouldn't be questioning myself here, Robin, considering I lived in the the house you speak of when it was open! First floor Ivanhoe Ct. ground level - there was a woman in the basement below me whose door faces Bardstown Rd. Are we talking about the same place? Where the tattoo parlor resides? I LOVED that studio apt., 8 windows overlooking Bardstown Rd and four facing the court, and SUPER funky decor, too! All for the low price of $395.

Jackie, my grandparents owned the whole house, but I remember the main entrance to their living room being the front door facing Ivanhoe Court. I think maybe they had a garage underneath.

No, of course, I figured they did own the whole thing at that time - my landlord was into buying old houses and splitting them up. We're talking about the same place for sure. But I had to take a second to remember if it was yellow or not. My apt. was definitely a former dining room or something and my teeny tiny kitchen with double glass doors must have been a something other than a kitchen. I've never loved a good thunderstorm as much as I did there, with all of the windows open and waiting to get struck by lightening. I was eighteen yrs old and totally fearless. *weepy tears of nostalgia*

Wow !! A good friend of mine used to live on Ivanhoe Ct ( other side 3 doors down ) at the time there was a girl who lived on the first floor with a couple of children in the same house you all are talking about. She used to have some pretty big parties there !
We spent many a day on those steep steps leading to Bardstown Rd watching the world go by !! :D

Very small world indeed !!

Steve, one of our bartenders lives in one of those apartments, him and his brother owned the former Big Daves.
I heard there were some " throwdowns " up there in the Fat Cat's days 8)

I remember something about drinking every beer on there list and getting your name on the ceiling or something like that ?

This is a warning from my wife:
She believes there is a curse on the spot because the folks who opened Baja Bay painted over the Fat Cat's Hall Of Foam. Her advice is the new tenant should uncover it to dispell the evil.
Really, I swear she just said this a few minutes ago when I told her what I read here. Not a superstitious sort myself but this is her two cents. If the new folks haven't been around the area since back then, almost anybody that walks by the place in their early 40s or older can show them where to (carefully) take off the paint!

I too was a fan of Fat Cat's. I did most of my underage imbibing there (fake ID's were easier to come by then) and also was proud to be on the "Wall of Foam" 8)
They had good sandwiches too! :D
I wonder why Big Dave's didn't make it. It seemed packed to me every time I was in there.
It should be a no brainer as a neighborhood joint.

I'm betting the food. I went once and it was the worst meal I ever paid for.

New to the city, I really enjoyed it as Judge Roy Beans. Loved the back deck and for a while they had Single's wine tasting events that were actually fun. Food was okay, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere ( and would drive cross town for it).
