Indiana's new Growler Law

Roger,

I saw where the Growler law was passed. I hope the Sunday tourism is good to you.

Also saw that two cases of cans can be carried out. I think Roger has mentioned the possibility of canning in the past? That would be cool...

I believe they are talking about Microbreweries being able to sell beer for Sunday carryout.
Here a link to the legislation that will be effective July 1, 2010.

Thank you. It's good for tourism in the sense that people can come here on Sunday and buy product to take home, but also for the neighborhood people who've been walking and biking to Bank Street on Sunday. The fact that is makes so much sense probably is the reason for it taking so long, but that's okay. Along with it, beginning in the fall, we won't have to cease sales during an election day.

Hurray for that! Talk about an antiquated statute.

I'll never forget my first Nov election here walking into Liquor Barn to get wine for dinner only to find all the liquor/wine covered and being told they couldn't sell under the polls closed! Never heard of such a thing; what do they think- we'll all get drunk and go on a ( liberal) voting freazy? Or Mitch McConnell's going buy cases of beer to give out to buy votes???

No joke. I'm so tired of our society's ridiculous ways. Whatever happened to live and let live? Good grief. I love the fact that I'm a 31 y.o. man but am told that I can't buy beer on election day before the polls close.

Cheers...

Dan-
Could be worse. On this side of the river, I can't buy alcohol for carry out on 52 Sundays per year unless I visit a local winery or (now) a microbrew. I wonder which segment of society is behind that statute? Nevermind, I figgered that out years ago.

I'd like to see that. :D

Actually, though, as I understand it, the roots of this law do indeed go back to the old practice of buying votes with half-pints. Historically, it's said that Louisville learned its political lessons from Chicago.

You'd be surprised, and I intend this only as a statement of reality and not an effort to start a flame war: Not everyone who sells alcohol for carry-out wants to be open on Sunday.

I'm not surprised at all and believe the Package Store Association is very much opposed to Sunday sales for a variety of reasons, none of which directly benefit the consumer. The law would not require them to be open, but they'd almost be forced to do so, to protect their market share.

Anne works the polls out here and the old timers tell her about all the politicians passing out half pints from the trunk of their cars right outside of the polling place. Being a Chicago native I can easily believe this practice hails from the windy city.

That's great news!

I don't see why that particular prohibition was in place. Alcohol isn't going to be responsible for people throwing caution to the wind and electing a bunch of absolute imbeciles. We all know people are eager to do that without any libations!

Edit:

Actually, that's a pretty convincing argument for the sale of alcohol. Its the only thing that got me through the last election. (I'm a third party member, so I lost no matter what the outcome.)

Hey Paul, I was just thinking we haven't seen you post up here recently. I guess it takes a "beer" thread to bring you out. :)
