A rather unfortunate experience...

by Michelle R. » Mon Mar 15, 2010 9:37 am

Well, my husband and I had heard good things about Captain Pepperjacks, so we decided to go last night for dinner. From the start, it was just an all around bad experience. Our pub nuggets, $7.99 (artichokes dipped in beer batter and fried) were so saturated with grease that they were rubbery. We were so hungry after waiting for them for 30 minutes, that we ate them anyway. The $11.99 fried chicken dinner we'd heard so much about was almost laughable. My husband's dinner (fried chicken, red beans and rice, and mixed greens) Consisted of 2 wings, a tiny thigh or breast, a small dish of Glory greens from a can, and a dish of red beans and rice, also from a can. My dinner, also chicken, consisted of 3 teeny pieces of fried chicken, canned greens, and burnt fries. To add to the ambiance, we could hear the staff in the kitchen screaming at each other. In addition, people were walking out left and right, because the wait time for food was so long. When my husband went to pay for our meal, he told the manager that we were dis-satisfied, the first time we have ever been unhappy enough to complain, and they took 15% off of the bill, "for our trouble." We seriously could have had a better quality chicken dinner at Popeye's for $6 or $7, as opposed to $11.99. I don't understand how this place could have gone from a glowing review last year, to whatever was going on yesterday. Maybe they were just having a REALLY bad day, but they did not make a good impression on us AT ALL. Just sad, considering upon looking at the menu, that the place had the potential to be awesome.

I had the fried chicken once and it was about like you described however I get the red beans and rice every time I go and they're always very good. I had the greens once and they were just OK. Their wings are always good. Service is slow on occasion and it sometimes does take a while for the food to come out but I've never had as bad of an experience as you described.

the fact that you were unable to discern whether your chicken cut was a breast or a thigh would be a big red flag for me! Yipe!

Darnit! We have a gift certificate for them that we haven't had a chance to use yet. This isn't exactly making me want to run over there to redeem it.

Service - 9/10

Wings - 8/10
Not as advertised on the menu, but tasty.

Artichoke Fritters - 8/10

Signature Club? - 6/10
Worst club ever, weird texture of the "meats".

Coconut Prawns - 6/10
Extremely greasy and fishy.

If you go, Beth, I sincerely hope you have a better experience than we had. I don't know if they were just having a really off night, or what.

If it had been the $2.99 lunch at KFC, I wouldn't have I wouldn't have bothered complaining. I would EXPECT canned sides for $2.99 at KFC. I'd expect a couple of wings. For $11.99, my husband (who is 6'3" and about 275 lbs of muscle) got two tiny wings, and a mystery piece of chicken. I also got three teeny pieces, and ended up giving the hubby a piece so he wouldn't be hungry.

After the rubbery appetizer, we actually asked for our check, because, frankly, we were not at all looking forward to dinner at this point. The waitress got pretty snippy with my husband, and told him they were already plating our dinner, so we stayed. I've had forgettable experiences in a restaurant, but never an experience so bad that I want to forget it.

By all means, go, your mileage may vary. This is just what happened when we were there.
