Where to get lobster?

by Adam Smith » Thu Mar 11, 2010 10:31 pm

Preferably whole or tails. My sister's birthday is tomorrow and she wants lobster but all she can think of is Red Lobster, but I was wondering if there were any alternatives?

Just go out to: Clearwater Foods on Produce Lane and by a couple and cook them for her! You can really get some great deals on "seconds" (missing a claw or something like that). Overall their prices are very reasonable. You can either buy a whole live lobsters are just tails.

As much as I would prefer a home cooked meal to Red Lobster... there's gonna be 6-8 of us and I refuse to cook for that many people.

This is a good question, Adam. Seems like lots of places served live lobster just a few years ago. Now, it's mostly frozen tails. Surely, one of Louisville's independent restaurants must serve live lobsters.

I keep thinking the same thing. Cribstone, during its short life in the Highlands, specialized in whole lobsters, but frankly, I'm rarely in the market for one and can't recall the last place (other than Cribstone) that I had one. Does Z's offer them? Jeff Ruby's? Just thinking out loud here ...

Jeff Ruby's has a butter poached lobster tail which sounds yummy. My sis is more of a whole lobster kinda girl, she love throwing on a bib and getting in there so maybe Red Lobster is our best option... at least the biscuits are good.

The last time I was at z's (6 months ago?) they had frozen tails only; no whole lobster.

I hope this isn't too off-topic here, but where I live (at least for the next few weeks :D), lobstering is an important part of the economy.

Unfortunately, the bottom has dropped out of the wholesale prices of these bugs, to less than $3 per pound. Considering the average size of a lobster you'll get in a restaurant is 1.25 pounds, there's a serious disconnect between what the "producers" get paid and what the consumer pays at the other end.

Lobsters pass through many hands from one end of the process to the other and the cost increases at each step, not the least of which is the high cost to ship them live.

We have a fresh lobster tank, starting at 1 1/2 lbs. We usually have several 3 to 5 pound lobsters but have sold out, will be getting more in Monday.

Adam, we have plenty of fresh lobsters available at 1 1/2 lbs, if you are interested in making a reservation for your sister's birthday PM me or call 228-1651.
Thanks

Mitchell's Fish Market has been advertising a special with tails, and another with whole lobsters. Call them to find out what's available tonight!

I agree with Mitchell's recommendation. Great people and great seafood. Ask for Hap the GM...

Just another example of "the man tryin' to keep a brutha down"...seriously.

We eat Lobster once or twice a year (I'd love to eat it more often but...) and I can't say that I've noticed the retail price any lower than it's been in the past...so someone is obviously getting screwed.

Mitchell's is certainly an option but Captain's Quarters gets my vote...Alan and the staff have got that place humming along pretty darn good.
