Sam's Food and Spirits opening at Highlander Point

by Mark P » Sat Mar 06, 2010 8:55 pm

We were just grabbing dinner at El Nopal at Highlander Point and noticed that the sign for Sam's was relocated from the old location to the spot previously occupied by Scuddles Seafood, and before that Tumbleweed.

I'm fairly excited as I always say there needs to be a "normal" restaurant on top of the hill.

I told the forum about this back in December. Were you not paying attention Mark? Also, what do you mean by a normal restaurant? Would that be one that serves potato skins, spinach dip and budweiser?

There is a normal restaurant just across 150 from Highlander Point called Beef O'Brady's and they serve NABC beer. I should add Sam's in New Albany does a really good job selling NABC Elector Imperial Red.

In a thread a while back, someone mentioned that they spoke to Sam's owner and that they were not going to move there, but thanks for the semi-hostile reply.

I don't really know how to qualify what my wife and I deem "normal." I try to eat at non-chain places more than my wife likes, but somewhere with a menu along the lines of an O'Charley's (but with much better versions of their dishes). I guess the best way to state it is somewhere to go when we don't really know what we want. Sometimes I want Mexican and my wife wants "not Mexican." Its mostly pizza and Mexican food up here, and Beef's is not always up to par (plus its our de facto meeting place for coaches meetings). Also, we ate at AJ's probably 3 or 4 times while you were open (even though you didn't serve "spinach dip and potato skins"),which was 3-4 times more than Beef's.

Sounds just like my wife. She'll do El Nopal but not La Rosita.

My wife and I had dinner at Sam's tonight. The food was rather good, but the service was lacking. My wife had the fish and chicken tender meal with onion rings. She greatly enjoyed the fish and tenders. I thought her onion rings were outstanding. Not too much batter and a good crispness to them. I had the blackened seafood platter, which consisted of blackened tilapia, scallops, and shrimp with a baked potato and tomato basil soup. The soup, which took around 20 minutes to get was lukewarm, but very tasty. Seemed to be homemade. The seafood was all blackened perfectly. The fish was moist and flaky and the shrimp were large. The baked potato was big enough for my wife and I to split and had a good taste. Overall, I would say the food is better than I remember (it has probably been 5 years since I last ate at a Sam's).

The service was atrocious, but after finding out that tonight was prom night for Floyd Central, I can imagine that being short staffed on their first weekend would be less than ideal.

If it were up to my wife, Rosita would be the ONLY place we ate.
