Piling on to Mojito, and a question...

by brian s » Sun Jun 24, 2007 6:12 pm

So, we went to Mojito last night, and first of all I must offer congratulations to Fernando. It's actually quite a feat he's pulled off, and I drove home shaking my head that something as silly as food could have been so incredible, or created such an exuberant experience. Havana Rumba was without doubt in my top 3, but I think I really went in with no expectations. We arrived around 8pm Saturday night, I thought it might be a little crowded, since it was the weekend and due to Marty's review, but the place was packed, seriously packed, somewhere around a two and a half hour wait. We sidled up to the bar for a nicely assembled mojito and gin and tonic, a bit clueless as to where to stand for a while. It wasn't too long before we snagged two bar chairs. Looking through the menu, it all looked so good, I decided to try a couple of tapas at the bar. First was the guacamole and chicharritas, which were really good. Light, crispy plantain chips to dip in avocado, lime, cilantro and red onions. Next up was Boniato Frito, sweet potato fries with a sidecar of smoked honey. Smoked honey, you say? Yes,yes, yes and how. This is serious goodness right here. I almost wept. Needless to say: incredible. Trio de hummus next, and they even found a way to infuse an ordinary dish like hummus (garbazo, black bean, and roasted pepper) with some fantastic ingredients and additions.
Let me say a word at this point about the beautiful presentations: from the dish, to the plate on which it's served, to the drink glasses, all very contemporary and just flat out cool. It was somewhere around this point that I realized that my entire dinner was going to happen at the bar, so barkeep! More, more more!
Calamares Fritos were next, and nice calamari though they are, what really set them off was the avocado lime aioli. This was the second time tonight that I actually considered the consequences of lifting the sidecar/dipping cup to my lips. In the interest of decorum I declined, with regret.
Empty plate removed, new beautiful dish arrives, it's like magic. Now landing: croquetas de yuca, a beautiful crab cake in all it's glory, with yet more of the aforementioned avocado lime aioli. You may be no Amazing Kreskin yourself, but I'm sure you won't be suprised that I found the crab cake yet another mouth watering, flavor bursting dish.
At this point, we were squarely tucked in at an hour and a half, completely happy with our good fortune to sit at the bar, and ready for espresso and a dessert, which ended up being the churros con chocolate. I regret to inform you that I only had a very little bit of this excellent dish, as we were sharing and I thought I may lose a digit if I attempted another bite.
So, we laughed, we cried, we talked to Fernando for a minute, as he was just a tiny bit busy, and ate our way through the joys of an otherwise stormy night. Congratulations guys, thanks for a fantastic restaurant.

Now, slightly on subject, I'd like to know about downtown Louisville. Are we at a point yet where it *almost* makes financial sense to open a restaurant downtown? Is it still a huge risk? I guess not as much as it used to be. There are a lot of great places there already, and that's normally where I go when going out. Is the mentality changing yet? I love downtown, I'm down there a lot, and want people to understand so much. Anyway, I apologize for the length of this, end now.

Wow, my mouth is watering just reading all your descriptions. It sounds like they've hit a home run with Mojito. I can't wait to go!! Thanks for all the details.

Oh sorry Brian,
Not you, Fernando.... I was referring to how busy things are getting!

It's a good thing, but you have to make sure you eat your Wheaties everyday to keep up!

And on another side note, Derby City Espresso won for the best bagels downtown, thanks again to Matthew. He's got a cool thing going down there, make it a point to stop by.

Did I miss something? What did Matthew win? It is a fun place and he's a great guy. So, Matthew, congrats on winning something.

bagels

by brian s » Mon Jun 25, 2007 10:14 pm

I had a post a few weeks ago lamenting the lack of bagels downtown. Anywhere. I wept. Matthew, the consoling entrepreneur that he is, was all over it. Special toaster with a bagel setting and everything. Maybe I just gave away a secret. Sorry matthew.

Yeah, I was going to go with the right pinky, I thought that one would be my pick. Maybe ring finger. One of the two. The dessert was so good, this was my thinking at the time. I hope mojito/havana rumba continues to receive support, as they are two of a limited few that really blow my mind.

Mojito's is booming!!!

by Kim H » Sat Jun 30, 2007 2:02 am

Hi! I haven't been online in a while. We live very near Mojito's, and I like to drive by to see how business is doing. They have been consistently busy busy, and I can attest that their food is phenomenal. Anyway, they have added tables to the sidewalk out front to help accomodate their extreme popularity. They are going to outgrow that little spot QUICK!!! It can be a wait to get a table, but it's sooooooooooo worth it. Go Fernando!

I'll add my 2 cents. I've eaten at Havana Rumba many times and even taken some Cuban friends there. Always excellent and the Cubanos were raving so that says volumes right there. We went to Mojito last night and were blown away. There were six of us and I think we tried just about everything on the menu (except the paella - we'll be making a special trip for that) and it was all fantastic. The shrimp were succulent and cooked perfectly and the meatballs remind me of my Mom's but with a kick. Great flavors, beautiful presentation and excellent drinks.

Congrats to everyone at the restaurant, our evening was wonderful.

*Short Review*I made it down last week on Tuesday. We got their about 8:45 and we still had to wait 15 minutes on a table. We wanted to sit inside but the only available table was outside so we took it.Started with 4 tapas. We had the mussels, queso, beef empanadas, and the omelette .Everyone thing was excellent. The mussels and empanadas were mouth watering.Ha I had the urge to lift the bowl to my mouth the mussels came in also.We then ordered the seafood Paella. It was HUGE!We only ate half but I had to restrain myself from eating another bite. The most difficult part of dining at Mojito is having to pick your items. There so much variety you are afraid you might miss out until the next time. I will definately be back and back ....and back. I would suggest getting the Mojito pitcher if you're going to share. There was a little more soda in the pitcher though.

We have been on a Mojito tear lately. Celebrated our wedding anniversary there 2 weeks ago and have been by for 2 lunches. Lunch time is our favorite as there is usually no wait and they have, without any hesitation, the BEST "cheeseburger" in town!
