Borromeos

by John Hagan » Mon Mar 01, 2010 9:55 am

I have noticed a number of threads lately about pizza joints. On my way home from Nashville on Saturday I had the jones for a pizza. I had been in the car for the better part of three hours and just wanted to get home. I remembered somebody here mentioning Borromeos on Smyrna. Seeing that I was on 265 heading for Taylorsville rd it didnt seem that far out of my way. I asked Anne to look up the number and call ahead. I had never been there before but remembered somebody saying it was right next door to that barrel shaped ice cream shop. Indeed, its right off 265 in a little strip mall. The place was filled up with a mix of folks watching the game as well as a mix of young families. It seemed as though you could be comfortable bringing your kids there or meeting up with a couple guys from work for a beer and pizza. My order was to go so I cant speak much about the service other than to say everyone I encountered there was very friendly and helpful. We went with a large (14") half sausage and half meatball on a thin crust( I guess they offer a thicker version as well). I really enjoyed the thin crust. It reminded me somewhat of the thin crust pizza we would get back in Chicago. Almost cracker like but still retaining some fold-ability.The sauce was not overly sweet or overly "pizza" spiced. I actually could have gone for a bit more oregano, but thats a minor complaint. One of things that stood out to me was the sausage. It was not the little "rabbit pellets" you often see around town, this was good lumpy pieces of Italian sausage with a good dose of fennel in the mix. The tasty meatballs were tender but had enough texture to hold up to the time in the pizza oven without becoming mushy. Overall a pretty solid pizza for under 14 bucks. Im not going to say its my favorite in town, but for out here on the eastern end of civilization its quite good. If you live in the area I would recommend checking it out. When googled, a link came up for them, but it really wasn't,its just an ad for some pizza related sites.

The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

We don't live far from there and really enjoy it. The cheese bread/sticks are really great! We like to order the thicker crusted pizza - but it's very tasty either way!

I have been meaning to make a post about Borromeos. Often my family stops by and enjoys a pie after visiting with the grandparents. It is above average, especially when you don't have many choices in the area.
