German Cuisine

OK, a post on Robin's companion WLDG site got me to thinking about German cuisine. Where do I get a fix of good, genuine, authentic German food in 'Ville? I'm not looking for brats and potato salad as I can make that at home. .

The gang got it right, Bill. Gasthaus and Erika's are pretty much the sum and scope of it. Although this town has a strong German heritage, it's thoroughly assimilated, and mostly "German" means brats and potato salad, plus maybe Sauerkraut. Actually, Flabby's in Germantown is a good place to go for a sense of old Louisville Germantown character and assimilated-style but still tasty "German" fare.

But Gasthaus is it for upscale German, and Erika's runs a fairly close second.

*thumbs up* Even my German mother has labeled Erika's as "not too bad".

Hey. She's German. It says a lot...

We've had a party each year for the past 3 or 4 years and we basically make our own Sauerbraten, Spaetzle, Red Cabbage and German Potato salad for about 25 people. It's a lot of fun and everybody loves it. Wasn't hard to make and makes the kitchen smell wonderful.

I've always meant to make it out to Gasthaus, but I can vouch for the quality of Erika's fare. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it also comes in a bit cheaper than Gasthaus.

Bill,

I have to say you need to head the other direction.
The Schnitzelbank has been doing it right for nearly 50 years.

Justin-
We dined at the Schnitzelbank about a year ago when we were looking at properties in that area. It was very good, but unfortunately we don't go that way very often.
Thanks.

I guess I'll rock the boat a little on the Gasthaus. I've been once and found it a poor value. The food was ok, but should have been better for the price.

I'm sure Schnitzelbank is quality food, but can't see myself driving nearly 2 hours for dinner.

I'm not driving 2 hours either, but Bill is in a different part of our area. He will probably have a hour drive to Gasthaus and maybe a hour and 15 minute drive to Jasper. I use to live in Bill's area and know what it is like to drive a hour to eat a good meal. You get use to it real fast. Plus, you can throw in a nice scenic drive through Patoka Lake and French Lick.

I think its also the charm of going to Jasper. The town has such a unique feel to it. I admit, its a day trip to take advantage of, but we like going up there once or twice a year.

Schnitzelbank also has a good selection of German beers, both on-tap and bottled! Plus, they'll do things "your style" - for example, although it's not on the menu they made a schnitzel "a la Holstein" (with the fried egg on top) for me after I asked.

+1 to Justin for suggesting Schnitzelbank. Like he said, it's barely more than an hour from Depauw (I have family there), and the drive on IN-64 through Hoosier National Forest is nice.
