Just for the record, I'm not a fan of Twitter. Does anyone else get tired of hearing about every single feeling, random thought, and bowel movement that people have?

I recognize that it can be used as a legitimate PR tool, but I honestly don't have the fortitude to deal with everyone else on there. I'm sure some of you here must feel the same way.

I completely agree. Some of these twitter folks should be taken aside and told, "Seriously, your life isn't that interesting." I've worked with, had dinner with, recreated with many 'twitterers' and texters and I've often wondered if they realize how rude and egocentric they appear to others.
Or am I just being an old grouch?

In my own defense, I was super hesitant on using Twitter at first... My concerns echoed what most of you have said... I just didn't understand the point of it. Now that I've begun using it though, It's value to me for professional information/etc. is amazing.

I used twitter almost solely to keep up with and communicate with other chefs around the country/world.
I have almost three times the amount of people following me, as those I follow... simply too hard to keep up, and I really only follow those who I really am interested in what they do.

Honestly, I use Twitter more for reading than writing.
Collaboration with other chefs, exchange of ideas and information... It's truly revolutionized the way chefs communicate with each other and share knowledge.

It's fascinating to see "works in progress" and get in the head of some of these people.

Actually, I've expanded my own personal network of colleagues through Twitter.
I've had serious exchanges about food and philosophy with some of the best chefs in the world - that would have been impossible without the service. Furthermore, I've become close with a handful of young up and coming chefs whom we're in constant contact with each other.

Furthermore, I follow a handful of local and national specialty food purveyors whom I can have the most up to date product information from (@whatchefswant, @earthydelights, @TeamSeafoodS, @grasshopperdist).

I (generally) don't tweet any misc. daily "this is what I'm doing" content - It's almost exclusively a professional tool for me.

Locals I follow on Twitter:

http://twitter.com/BankStBrewhouse
http://twitter.com/michaelpaley
http://twitter.com/whatchefswant
http://twitter.com/SarahFritschner
http://twitter.com/LouHotBytes
http://twitter.com/grasshopperdist
http://twitter.com/BonVivantSavant

In addition to my own account (http://twitter.com/theironicchef), I also -sporadically- maintain http://twitter.com/OakroomKitchen

Twitter is like any other online service available out there...
It's what you make of it - how you choose to use it, and what you choose to filter in and out.

I confess I'm a Twitter addict. I actually did an article on this a little while back and was surprised to see how few restaurants in town were on Twitter. I added those that I found to a Twitter list: http://twitter.com/#/list/danamac/louisville-restaurants so I can easily see what's going on at a glance.

...and here I thought "Twitter" was just a tool for semi-literate professional athletes and trollopy Hollywood starlets used to explain their latest brush with the law. Hmmm...shows ya what I know.
