Good Weekend so far...

by Mark P » Sun Feb 14, 2010 12:45 pm

My wife and son used a couple of expiring free flights to visit her parents in Canada this weekend so I decided to hit some places that I either haven't been to before or haven't been to in a while.

Friday for lunch I decided to sneak across the river and grab a cheese steak from Danny Mac's. Have never bee before, but it popped up on the sandwich thread a lot. Good God was it amazing. I loved how it had a little bit of a crunch. One of the best I have ever had! Only thing I would have liked was a wider aus jus container so I could submerge more of it. That, or maybe ask Danny Mac to dip the whole thing in the first place.

For dinner Friday, I picked up a meatball pizza and a stuffed breadwick from Wick's on State Street. Being from Chicago, I'm partial to Chicago style, but Wick's and NABC pizza are 1 and 1a for Louisville pizza to me.

After not eating all day Saturday, see above, I ventured to Bank Street Brewhouse for dinner. I have been chomping at the bit to get in there as Rich O's is one of my favorite places. I had the Croque Madame sandwich with pommes frites. The sandwich was outstanding! The bread stayed crunchy even though smothered with mornay sauce. The only change I would have made was to not "bury" the prosciutto between the 2 pieces of black forest ham. I'm a big prosciutto fan, and I just didnt get the full taste of it, but a very good meal nonetheless. I called my wife last night and explained that "we" may have a new favorite place.

I'm trying to find the room to get to La Rosita and/or Lonnies, but I dunno if I can manage it. Really love both of them though! Maybe I'll be hungry by dinner tomorrow.

Glad you liked Bank Street. We had quite a bump the past two days owing to the Rosen review and the Food & Dining cover. Everyone's exhausted, but in a good way.

If you make it to La Rosita's, check out the items on the table tents. Israel has added some new dishes, and while I haven't tried them all, they appear quite promising. He continues to incorporate ideas gleaned from his training in culinary school gig in Mexico last year, and the results are quite pleasing to New Albanians & guests.

I usually get the Mayan quesadilla, but always looking for something new at La Rosita.

I was glad to see that BSB was packed when I walked in, I grabbed one of the last seats at the end of the bar. Even saw a co-worker of mine. I'm not sure of the amount of activity is involved in the brewing process, but I would definitely like to grab a seat and watch sometime.

Thanks for coming in. There is more to smell than see on a brew-day. All processes are in enclosed tanks. You'll see one of us move a hose now and then, but from a viewing standpoint, pretty boring.
