Wanting a great bar, at which to watch basketball.

by Matthew D » Fri Feb 12, 2010 9:17 am

My team (the University of Dayton Flyers) is playing on ESPNU at 4pm on Saturday. I'm looking for a great bar to sit at to watch the game. And when I say bar, I mean the physical, actual bar, not the general area surrounding the bar or the more general building we happen to call "a bar." None of the local teams are playing at that time, so there will be no need to fight for TV space.

Just looking for a good bar with good beer choices. Coming from the Taylorsville at Hurstbourne area but willing to travel (including Southern Indiana). Where's a good bar (with good TV access) to saddle up to to watch my team?
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

It's a chain, but BJ's Brewhouse fits and it is close.

The BW3 in Stony Brook is a good place to watch a game. They have a nice bar. The UD Alumni Association frequents Joe's Older Than Dirt in Lyndon. Don't know if anyone is planning on going up for the game or not.

Wherever you decide to watch... Go Flyers!

I was at Rocky's on the river last night for their Bell's event, and it looks like it has everything you are looking for. A big spacious bar, and what looked like 25-30 taps of good beer, including the remnants of all the Bells, including Hopslam, Expedition Stout, Sparkling Ale, and several other gems on tap.

Flanagan's. Ample bar space, good TV's over the bar. Good beer selection. Good food.

Cumberland Brews also often has basketball games going during the day. There are a few TVs within viewing range while sitting at the bar.

This has been a constant battle in my household. My husband loves watching sports, doesn't care too much what is in his belly for food other than Budweiser (or a good red beer) and hates a pretentious crowd down the the very core of his being. We live by the Gordita Trailer we dont travel too far....

Supporting local (all good eats):
O'Sheas
Flannagans
Boom Bozz Taphouse
Impellizeri's
Cumberland Brew (NOT a sports bar by any stretch but local and nice atmosphere to keep you amused)

This is what is middle ground with (or between) us in chains:
Sigh...BW-3's in J-town
BJ's (at the top of my chain list if I must)
Old Chicago
Smokey Bones
Buckheads
And another HUGE sigh...(Chili's)

We were at Smokey Bones this evening and it was like opening night there. I'm guessing the convention in town gave them a boost.

Enjoy!

Dundee Tavern at the Douglas Loop
Good beer selection and menu
Bar has great viewing of televisions from all seats
Alan Hincks
Overtime Sports Bar and Grille

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

Brings back memories of my days at Tumbleweed. The convention was a nice bounce back from the first-of-the-year slow period. Nothing like farm boys and their steak.

Alan, I think you might have picked the winner. Sorry, I don't have a prize.

I was giving this some thought yesterday, and came up with the following bars I like.

-- Cumberland - Both bars are nice, but the upstairs one is quieter and there is not a walkway behind you
-- Za's - have watched some Tour de France there in the past
-- Flannagan's - Nice when not busy (say Wednesday afternoon soccer), but the bar becomes "lingering zone" on the weekend
-- Outlook Inn - but I think the TVs are off to the side
-- BBC Taproom - Not the best for TV watching, but probably best bar in town
-- Cafe Lou Lou (Dundee Loop) - Nice when not busy with really good natural lighting
-- Baxter Station - I like watching the train. What can I say.
-- Barrett Bar - Nicer than the one across the street. I miss this one.

I won't name specific bars I don't like but here's some characteristics that make a bad bar for me:

-- Doubles as the "waiting" area
-- Doubles as the main walkway for the place, though I make an exception for shotgun bars like Cumberland and Baxter Station
-- Too loud

Hadn't thought of Dundee. That's a good one.

Zanzabar. Amazing food, great people. When we watch the Cards anywhere other than Freedom Hall or our living room, that's where we go.
