Germantown - need advice

by JustinHammond » Fri Feb 05, 2010 1:38 pm

I'm planning a restaurant/bar hopping trip with a few friends this Sat. that will be centered around Germantown. I am not familiar with the area so I need some advice.

Flabby's for dinner(?) and Swan Dive/Nachbar for beer, that is all I've got.

Any suggestions?

Zanzabar has great food and a great beer selection. i would suggest making that one of your stops. Another consideration for dinner is Olivia's on Goss.

Check's on Burnett is pretty much the quintessential Germantown bar. It's largely unchanged since the 70's, and is a must try for the old school G-town experience. (The bean soup is mandatory.) Zeppelin Cafe is a very nice newcomer across the street. I'm pretty sure that Olivia's, although fantastic, is normally only open for lunch and Sunday brunch (Best brunch in town, IMHO) . They are only open for dinner for special events and private parties. Jockamo's has some good brews, and some of my favoritie breadsticks in town. Danny Macs and Come Back in are also both really good, although I think Danny Mac's is technically in Parkway Village and Come Back might be in Paristown.

Swan Dive is a great cozy little dive bar. Becca is super friendly and its always pretty mellow in there even when its crowded (they got Hopslam too). Nach Bar is great too but it can attract the younger set and gets really crowded in the winter. But still, it's one of my favorite bars in Louisville.

I have bragged on the grub at Zanzabar before. Great food.

Flabby's and Checks are two G-town institutions as far as I am concerned. And then there is the Schnitzleburg on Texas and Goss. I think they recently got a new owner so its not as depressing as before. It can be a who's who of oddballs on certain nights.

Pop's Place down Goss is supposed to be interesting. I haven't been inside yet and the only time I strolled by there was a biker and an old woman in a neck brace at the bar. I was really hoping they were arm wrestling or something goofy like that. Anyways, it looked interesting.

I live in Schnitzelburg, and our bar hops usually go something like this:

1. Flabby's for fried chicken (Fri-Sat only)
2. Zeppelin for beer cheese and pretzels
3. Check's for a drink and karaoke or trivia watching, depending on the night
4. A sobering hike to the Nachbar for finish the night.

Forget Pop's Place. It's been closed for a couple of weeks. Hope the old Germantown Cafe comes back. It's been closed for about a year.

That's interesting about Pop's, have been by there a bunch lately (I live nearby), but didn't know it was closed. Frankly, it didn't seem like it got much traffic, even though it's in an okay location. Before Pop's opened, it was advertised as for rent, and said rent was really, really cheap, so I'm sure something will come about soon in the space.

I've heard some rumors about Germantown Cafe re-opening (or at least something happening in the space), but no dice as of yet.

And of course, the Old Hickory recently got another stop use order from the city, so who knows when that will be re-opening?

Ditto "Check's" (supra)...and their fish sandwiches are excellent.

I was at a Super Bowl party last night and met a couple that had just purchased the Germantown Cafe, don't recall their name or when they are re-opening. should have paid more attention :(
