Movie Popcorn

by Mike M » Fri Feb 05, 2010 1:53 am

When going to the movies popcorn has always been a staple for me, but have noticed over the past few years the quality has gotten to be dreadful, went to Showcase on Preston the other night, and ask the guy how old the popcorn was, and he said "to be honest it was popped yesterday morning" Really? how is an item with a 900% profit margin not made fresh every two hours or so, even if not many people are going to buy it? Just a heads up always ask how old it is.

My friend Jesse worked in a movie theatre all throughout high school and now he won't touch popcorn at the movies. The very smell of it causes him mild nausea.

I'm the same way. For me, the best popcorn is found at Baxter Theaters or Village 8. It always seems to be popping fresh when I'm in there. I also got freshly popped corn at the theaters off Westport but even though it was fresh still didn't taste as 'corny' as Baxter's.

I only eat it when making sure it comes straight out of the popcorn maker. Otherwise, it'll probably be from one of the garbage bag sized plastic bags under the bins. NO WAY will I touch that stuff.

I worked at the old River Falls Mall theatres for a short spell as a youngster and one of my duties when I wasn't splicing trailers together, was popping the popcorn. Of course this was almost twenty years ago but we did in fact pop the corn in batches, We put it into 50 gallon bags for serving later.
I worked on one Christmas (1991 I think) and we pre-popped about 200 bags for the busy holiday.
I would be 99% certain and it would not surprise me at all if the big multiplexes are still doing it the same way. Especially on busy holidays or when there is a big movie opening.

At Tinsel Town I see it being popped all the time. It's fine. I just avoid that "oil slick" they call butter.

The old Vogue Theater in St. Matthews used to have the best popcorn ever. People used to stop by in the evening and get it freshly popped to take home without even seeing a movie.

I want to buy an old style movie popcorn machine. I would buy this and use it all the time if I had space:

I am the same way about movie popcorn. Popped the old fashioned way. Unfortunatly all the theaters around here now either pop it the day before or even worse, have it shipped in!! Except for one theater. Village 8. They still pop it right there in front of you, and it's the best tasting popcorn around here. and it tastes wonderful. If you can deal with the substandard theaters and sound system once in a while, it's totally worth the trip. Plus it's only 2 bux a ticket. Can't beat the price!

Oh and as mentioned about Baxter still pops theirs on-site too, but I still don't think it's as good as Village's... just my two cents. :)

I see them popping it fresh every time I go to Cinema de Lux 20: Stonybrook.

Stonybrook DOES pop it, but notice how it goes into bags. Now having said that, I have asked for the fresh and they have given it to me. Personally, I try very hard NOT to buy popcorn at the movies anymore. I HATE paying $6 for a bag of popcorn not much bigger than a microwave bag at home that costs pennies. I'm cheap.

Why? Being as it's against most Theaters policy bringing outside Food or Drink?

Most? I have never seen any theater that allows outside food or drink.

Let me know of any that do, because my next movie going experience will include a Boombozz pizza and a growler of Hoptimus.

The great escape on Lewis and Clark Parkway seems to pop in small batches. At least, whenever I go in there I see them popping fresh, as a rule. Of course, I don't go that often so maybe I just keep getting lucky.
