Salt - health study

by Nimbus Couzin » Thu Jan 28, 2010 3:15 pm

Did anyone catch this?

Basically, just a slight reduction in salt, ten percent I think, could save 90,000 lives per year.

I thought of this because of the potato chip thread.

But some of us (like those who work at JCPS, hint hint or make menus for other large establishments) could have a substantial impact on the health of our city.

At least think about it....thanks.

Cheers!

This is one of my biggest gripes with the food industry, oversaturation with sodium.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in the minority, as when eating with friends, I will see them load even more salt from the shaker to food that is already overloaded with salt when it comes from the kitchen. When I cook, I use very little salt and let everyone season to taste.

Don't even get me started on sodium content in grocery foods. Ugh.

Terri, I'm the same way. I use little salt when cooking, because I don't like most food very salty (french fries and popcorn may be the exceptions.) People can add their own. Always better to have to add more, because you can't reduce it once it's there. I cannot stand it when I accidentally oversalt something.

I don't like watching people load up with salt. Actually, what I dislike the most, and I believe is also considered rude to the chef or host, is when people dump salt on their food without even tasting it first.

Maybe our illustrious Metro Council can limit the amount of salt in prepared foods to protect us from ourselves?

A good plank for a mayoral campaign?

Don't give 'em any ideas. There's already people (aka idiots) advocating putting statins like Lipitor in the water supply.

I rarely add salt to anything that I eat. There's enough sodium in just about everything that we buy already.

That so reminds me of the movie "Idiocracy".

Haven't read the article yet, but I don't think the issue is the salt people use to season their food at home or a restaurant. The real trouble is the amount of sodium hidden in all kinds of processed food. All that bagged, boxed, and canned stuff that has little nutritional value and less flavor from the outset has tons of salt added to it. Instead of cutting out salt, people need to get back in their kitchens and start cooking. If you're using whole foods and using salt to enhance their flavors I really don't think you are doing any harm. Just don't get so carried away that all you taste is the salt. And if on occasion you don't have time to cook, patronize one of our great restaurants that focus on quality ingredients. I doubt think their salt additions will harm you nearly as much as their use of butter!
