Appropriate Dress for Buck's?

by Bonnie E. » Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:55 am

Can someone please tell me the appropriate dress for a Saturday evening at Buck's? I've read it's "old school" so would a jacket and tie be called for? Or less formal? Dress for the ladies? As always, thanks for your help.

I don't think it's quite that formal, Bonnie. Although I kind of like ties, I wouldn't feel obliged to wear one to dine at Buck's. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable going in wearing jeans and a golf shirt, although I honestly don't think they'd toss anyone out for that.

I think dresses would be appropriate for women, but certainly not required. My opinion, "business casual" is fine, although you can dress up to celebrate the Olde Victorian atmosphere if you want to.

I agree with Robin. Yes, it's old world, "ladies who lunch" type place and the atmosphere reflects it. It is the type of place I would feel very comfortable taking a matrionly Aunt to dine. Definatly not Jeans and polo place.

Yeah, I'd avoid jeans, etc. It's the kind of place where I'd feel comfortable in anything from khacki's and a button down to a suit and tie.

Bonnie, I hope you don't mind, I changed your title a little, hoping to draw folks in with a more specific subject.

I'm going to disagree with my pal Bill V just a little bit ... I wouldn't really call it a "ladies who lunch" place, particularly when you take the very excellent bar into account. I think of it more as a Gatsby scene. 8)

I eat there for lunch about once a month and I wear slacks and a Polo shirt. If I was going for dinner, business casual is appropriate

Absolutely correct, sir. For the record, though, note that the OP wanted to know about the dinner setting. 8)

Robin, thanks for changing the subject title.

Also, thanks for everyone's input. "Gatsby's" sounds much better than "matronly Aunt" so I'll go with that!

Hopefully we won't be too out of place!

Point well taken, Robin. However, the hair has had a definate blue tint to it when I've dined there for lunch.

Ate dinner there about 10 days ago. At our table men wore nice pants & shirts with sweaters. At a nearby table men were wearing blazers, one with a tie and one without. At another table saw men in dark suits/ties. All were comfortable.

You should check out the Butterfly Garden Cafe then. If you want a true lunch spot for little 'olde' ladies, then that place has it all. Although the food was very good and the cold strawberry soup was amazing, I felt just a bit out of place there. My friend and I were easily 30 years younger than the next closest customer, and the mean age was probably well above the average life expectancy 50 years ago.

Do I have to do math to read your post, Paul?

Thanks for everyone's advice. The atmosphere at Buck's was great for an anniversary. Food was good. Martinis, apps, salads were great. Main's so so. Dirty Martinis, oysters Rock, Crawfish tails, chopped and Bibb. Bone in ribeye was very fatty, Bourbon Pecan Chicken was too sweet for me. Dessert was awesome! I am sorry I can't remember the name of the desert but Buck's is "known for it". Almondy, creamy, puff pastryish??? Really yummy. Thanks again!
