chinese restaurant recommendations?

by Ellen White » Sat Jan 23, 2010 6:39 pm

We are looking for a Chinese restaurant near St. Matthews. We don't like Jade Palace, Oriental House, or Emperor of China. We live right next to King Wok, but I don't really like that either. Any suggestions for a Chinese place (nothing fancy, just regular American Chinese food) in St. Matthews? Don't like Lemongrass either. My parameters would include Hurstbourne Lane to the Stonybrook part of Taylorsville Road to Breckenridge Lane, including US42, and as far as Crescent Hill, but no further. Thanks.

Red Pepper has quite the following on here but I've not been myself.
You pretty much named every other place every other place close to you though.

But Ellen said,
just regular American Chinese food

I know that Red Pepper has the two menus, but I don't think of anything they serve as
just regular American Chinese food

I always enjoyed Sesame Restaurant at the corner of Shelbyville Rd and Hurstborne Lane in the Walgreens Shopping Center. Then, Szechuan Garden in Plainview; next to the Post office has never disappointed. But, those are just two right there in the area.

Ellen, I'm another big fan of Red Pepper, and it's within your range - just a block or two west of Hillcrest/Zorn on Brownsboro Road in Crescent Hill.

They do have both Chinese-American and authentic Chinese menus, and you won't be disappointed if you stick with the Chinese-American. But if you're feeling even just a little adventurous, look over the Chinese menu and, if you see something that looks good, give it a try. You may be in for a happy surprise.

Oriental House has not been mentioned, and it's also right on Shelbyville Road (near Fairmeade, next light east of Hubbards Lane). It's been around for 50 years and its Chinese-American menu is good and as traditional as it gets, and they, too, have a really interesting authentic menu for those who prefer. We like it a lot, but Red Pepper still gets my nod for No. 1.

You could just go down Lexington Rd to Grinstead and eat at August Moon. Not too far from St Matthews.

Please try Red Pepper. They have both menus available. But do yourself one favor: Order the unique chicken smell. One taste and you will never look back!

What Ed said. I love that stuff.
I go with a friend who has no sense of adventure whatsoever and she LOVES the regular American style menu.

Based on the parameters you've laid out - I suggest "Sesame" or "Red Pepper"...I KNOW it's a chain, but "P.F. Chang's" is not a bad fallback...

...but if you're willing to travel a little farther NE, try "Tea Station Chinese Bistro" in Norton Commons, or "Liangs" over by Tinseltown Theatres.

How is Sesame's these days? I used to go about 10 years ago but I haven't been since that time. Is it still pretty good? We usually go to Oriental House or Jade Palace for dim sum so I don't ever get out to Sesame's.

It was not bad last time I went, but it has been a few months.

Jennifer, does Oriental House do dim sum of a tray or only of a menu.

By the way, I found out that Jade Palace will make bubble tea when the dim sum trays are rolling. Our server seemed to thing that it would not be available at other hours.

Gayle, Oriental House only has a short menu of dim sum. It's very good though. They cook it fresh so it's always hot when it comes out. They also have the menu all day long.

I love bubble tea. I'll remember to get that next time we're at Jade Palace.
