need some different cafe ideas

by Ellen White » Sun Jun 17, 2007 7:41 pm

On Saturdays, my daughter and I go out for lunch together, but we're in a rut. If she picks, we go to Third Avenue Cafe. If I pick, we go to Meridian Cafe. Sometimes, we get really crazy and go to North End. Does anyone have any suggestions for a cafe-type place? Of course, there's City Cafe Baxter and Stevens & Stevens, but anyplace else? I like Blooms and Cafe Emilie, but my daughter doesn't.
I'm talking about a nice cafe atmosphere, where you can get an interesting sandwich and some soup, nothing too heavy.

Have you tried Sweet and Savory on Bardstown Rd.? It's a small place, but they've got the best Egg Salad Sandwich and Tomato Dill Soup.

Have you tried Bistro New Albany? Or the place in Shops on the Alley next door to the Bristol on Bardstown Road?

Danish Express on Cannons lane, and I really enjoyed the Saturday lunch at Uptown Cafe.

3rd Avenue Cafe in Old Louisville has the best tomato basil soup I have ever tasted and I am totally addicted to their vegan black bean burrito with a side of wheatberry salad.

Shady Lane Cafe on Brownsboro

by NicoleP » Sun Jun 17, 2007 8:26 pm

another suggestion- Shady Lane Cafe on Brownsboro next to Party Mart. Their chicken quesadilla is one of the best in Louisville and they fry their own potato chips!!! I highly recommend!

A few more that haven't been mentioned: The Cafe in the Antique Mall on Goss, and Bluegrass Bistro in the antique mall on old Bardstown Road in Buechel. Also Alley Cat Cafe out in Middletown.

Just to clarify, you're probably talking about Butterfly Garden, which moved from the Shoppes building to another spot next door. Le Gallo Rosso is in the Shoppes now. Excellent family Italian, but not really what I'd call a cafe.

Danish Express?

by Kris Billiter » Tue Jun 19, 2007 1:38 pm

I always asumed they went out of business when Lotsa Pasta took over their space. Did they actually move, and where on Cannons are they? Maybe I'm totally confused. Thanks for any help! BTW, Sweet and Savory is a great place. We actually had our rehersal dinner there over four years ago. They weren't open for dinner so we were able to work something out with them. It was fabulous. They had a jerk chicken sandwhich at the time that I loved, so I asked if we could do a jerk chicken pasta. Unbelievable food. Good times indeed!

They did move around the corner to Cannons Lane just a door or two south of Frankfort, Kris, and they're going strong. I don't think they were real happy about having to move, but it was just one of those free-market situations where the lease came up and Lotsa Pasta made a bid for the space.

Here's a LouisvilleHotBytes review (October 2005) of Danish Express in the new location.

I'm not sure their hours/days of operation, but I would second Butterfly Garden Cafe. It's a lovely little spot, with delicious fare. I usually get the Asian Salad, with the wonderful chilled strawberry soup. I think their menu is produced monthly. They also have an iced tea of the day-last I tried was blackberry. Mmmm....Oh....and they also have scrumptious desserts. The surroundings are very dainty and lady-like, but don't let that deter you. (it almost scared me off the first time I went...I was afraid I would break something!)

If you don't mind going to Middletown, The CheddarBox Cafe is quite tasty. I love their Curry Chicken Salad and their house salad.

There is also a Cheddar Box in Chenoweth Square......but it mainly has outdoor seating.

Outdoor dining

by James Natsis » Thu Jun 21, 2007 9:45 am

My wife and I went to Ramseys on Bardstown Road for lunch last week. We had not been there since they added the patio out front. From the street it does not appear to be much. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice and roomy it was. Also, there is a large section under roof with fans. It was over 80 degrees outside but very pleasant on the patio.
