BJ's Brewhouse - redux

by Kyle L » Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:24 pm

I skimmed over the one thread on BJ's Brewhouse from 2008. But, I would like to know people's present opinions on BJ's Brewhouse. Please, no chain-indie debate; even though people are always interested in the subject. I'd just like to know if anyone has dined at BJ's Brewhouse lately and their experience.

Thanks.

We're longtime fans of BJ's and I just ate at the BJ's in OKC a couple of weeks ago (same menu and beer selection as the Louisville restaurant). No matter the location we've always found the food very good (including the pizza), the service above average and the beer outstanding. If "adventures in brewing" is your style (and that's cool if it is) you are much better off at BBC, NABC, etc. If great craft style beer without the "foo-foo" element is more your style you can't go wrong with any of BJ's beers.

I wouldn't (and don't) hesitate to take friends and family to BJ's

Was there Friday for lunch, pretty good Turkey Cobb sandwich and service was great
Never been there for dinner, hear good things about the beer though

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

I've never been, but heard a couple friends talk about their dishes. Checked out the menu on-line and it looked pretty decent. I'll have to give it a shot in the near future.

Thanks. :)

I've always had a good meal there, probably eaten there 3 or 4 times. Id say its in the upper echelon of chain restaurants. The menu is pretty expansive, like Cheesecake Factory, but much better than CF in my opinion. Nice bar setup with lots of big TVs too, thats the main reason we usually go as its close to where we live and not slammed during games.

I stand by my previous estimation: it functions exceptionally well in the capacity of a good, comfortable sports bar with above average food for such an establishment. We like to go there to watch games on the big screens, drink a few brews and eat some decent grub, but I wouldn't go if I were looking to have a "night out" sort of thing.

Again, I'm biased here. My GP's were good friends with the original owners. So we'd hit what I think was the original location in Laguna Beach (southern Cal) every time I was in town. We'd get pizza and beer. I doubt we ever ordered anything else. My gramma may have gotten a salad or something.

Since then, they've expanded a ton (and done well). So big menu now, but for me it will always be a local pizza joint. And I have a good friend who has brewed for them at their production brewery facility in Arizona. I'm biased. I still think of it as a small little two or three joint operation. Haven't been there in a long time (my GP's are long gone now).

Cheers....if you do go, I'd say try the pizza and beer.

Been there twice. On the first visit, I enjoyed the pizza and beer and Pizookie. My wife didn't care for the pizza, but enjoyed the beer and pizookie.

On a second visit, we wanted something fairly quick so we got soups and salads (and a kids meal for my daughter). The wedge salads were ok, the soup was below room temperature. We sent it back. It came out several minutes later boiling lava hot from microwave. I had chili, it wasn't very good. She had clam chowder, also not very good. I did enjoy their homemade root beer though. Kids meal (spaghetti) was fine for a kid, but I tasted it and it wasn't very good. It's unlikely we'll go back. With Yang Kee noodle a few feet away, there's no comparison.

I've been to both this place and Old Chicago once each. Both were exercises in mediocrity which just came off as lame attempts to do what NABC excels at. Pizza was just thrown together, with nothing exceptional to flavor or the crust. Service was abysmal at both as well. Extremely doubtful I'll go back to either one at the very least not on my own dime. I dont recommend either of the establishments to anyone.

I am kind of a big deal.
