Joe's Older Than Dirt

by Lori M » Sat Jan 16, 2010 6:17 pm

I work in the Lyndon area; and we are always looking for something quick and reasonable for lunch hour; preferably avoiding fast food. We do Starving Artist cafe occasionally, some J Gumbo, etc.

Went in to Joe's at 12:30 ish, seeing the sign outside that they can get you in and out quick for lunch express (or something like that). After seating ourselves, no one around to greet; a server finally came over after about 5 or 6 minutes. Took our drink orders, and we explained that we were on our lunch hour. She said that there was a large party 'over there' (we saw a group of about 7) that had just placed an order and therefore the kitchen would be slow.

She said she would check with the kitchen to see if we could make it out on time. Mind you, we were going to order off the quick express menu. She left our table; and we did not see her again......until we motioned to her (now about 15 minutes later) that we had to leave. There were quite a few tables occupied, she seemed to be alone; but didn't seem to care one way or another to fulfill her promise of checking with the kitchen.

My co-workers told me that poor service is the reason they stopped going at lunch (I am fairly new to this office). So, my question...is this normal? Anyone else go there at lunch?

I have eaten there, years ago, after a night of bowling, and even had a party there years ago. Just trying to see if we expected too much.

They serve food? I had no idea. In my misbegotten (but very fun) youth we would drink a pint or 10 there on rare nights. Haven't been in the place in 28 years, ouch!

Poor service and mediocre food were the reasons I quit going to Joe's. Next time try R Place Pub, (a little more out LaGrange Road, where it intersects with Whipps Mill Road, close to the Corner Cafe) where they have a nice plate lunch special for lunch, reasonably priced at about $5.25 - 5.95, depending.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Definately worth it...very tasty and you place your order at the bar. I used to go twice a week and was never dissapointed.

Don't forget My Patria, only 1/2 mile form Joe's.

I did not even know they were still open ?? I do not get out to that part of town much anymore.

Wasn't there one on Preston or Outer Loop at one time ?

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

Yes there was....I believe it is now an Auto Zone, or something along those lines. It is next door to what used to be, many years ago of course, Po Folks.

Still open and going strong from what I can see. The place is packed on the weekends with drinkers and sports fans. The hot wings and beer list are pretty solid. I would call it a bar vs. restaurant.

Been to Joe's several times to watch football games. The food is average to below average for bar food but worse than most restaurants. The food service is always slow, but they have a decent beer list and big screens on the patio so I can smoke cigars and watch the game. I will eat the fries and wings on occasion because those are decent, but everything else I've had isn't very good IMO.
