Vegetarian Without Soy?

by Eliza W » Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:49 pm

We have vegetarian out of town guests coming. Together with my family, there will be four adults and four well behaved children. I'm preparing most of our meals, but we'd like a couple of dinners out. They're considering moving, so I really want to make a good impression.

They're vegetarians, so milk and eggs are fine, but they've given up soy. I enjoy Zen Garden, but most things on the menu have tofu or edamame. Soy sauce is fine.

Is the Swan Dive okay for kids, of is it strictly a bar? What about places with more beans and grain, less tofu? Thanks.

I used to go to Vietnam Kitchen a lot when I was a vegetarian, but they mostly use soy/tofu as well. I've never personally met a vegetarian that didn't eat soy/tofu. I think that Zen Garden serves quite a few non-soy/tofu dishes as well.

I think it said in the CJ article that the Swan Dive doesn't allow minors.

You might try a less than obvious choice for your guests - I love the veggie plate at Havana Rumba. There's one cheese thing on it, but you could easily substitute.

I think Brownings has a few nice choices for non-meat eaters - several appetizers, salads, one sandwich, and a veggie pasta.

Lilly's is very vegetarian/vegan friendly. We always have options for vegetarians listed on both our lunch and dinner menu, and our chefs are always happy to create a dish for you.

How about Middle Eastern fare such as Grape Leaf. Tofu is certainly not native to their cusine and the choices are good for veggies. Also, any Indian restaurant in town would fit the bill.

Almost everything on the menu is vegetarian until you add meat to it, and all made there. U choose veggies as your option as opposed to meat. Especially lovely @ the moment is the purée of roasted garlic n potato soup that mike has been running this week.
Keep us in mind as a lunch option perhaps. We open @ 11:30am tues thru sat. Evenings can be difficult to seat larger groups w/out waiting is the reason I suggest lunch.
See the full menu online on the newly updated website.

Hello Eliza,

How about Bazo's? All the items on our menu can be made without the meat. We have several options

Veggie Quesadilla- Grilled green and red peppers, onions and shredded -cheddar jack cheese in a flour tortilla served with a side of fresh salsa, sour cream and guacamole.
Veggie Burrito - Grilled veggies, rice, beans , sour cream , lettuce and fresh salsa fresca and cheese in a warm flour tortilla.
Bean tacos - Our beans are not cooked in lard. They are completely vegetarian. This is also a good option

Just tell our cashiers that you are looking for vegetarian options and they should be able to take care of you.

I am also posting a link to our menu
