More praise for Equus!!!

by Dan Thomas » Fri Jan 15, 2010 1:03 pm

Chef Michael Hargrove and I had the extreme pleasure of partaking of the tasting menu at Equus last Friday night. Colleen had bunco that night and I had received a gift certificate in my E-mail from our favorite forumite from Maine, Steve A., to use before it expired. So it was Boy's (Chef's) Night Out.

I didn't think that the sweetbread preparation would ever change as it is a "classic" Equus dish, but the new Country Fried Sweetbread was so freakin' good that even if you are squeamish about offal, you couldn't possibly dislike this dish!

Everything else we were served was prepared perfectly. Chefs Chris King and Wes Gatlin are really doing a great job. From the mussels to the lamb, everything was executed as good as it could possibly be. I can't forget about desserts from one of my old interns and ex-employee at Big Spring, and now running the pantry station at Equus, Lis Tyree.

The wine was paired wonderfully and service was top-notch. Michael really seem to enjoy the food and experience as well. He's definitely the kind of chef who has no problem voicing his displeasure if something doesn't meet his expectations.

If you haven't been to Equus, you are truly missing out on something special.

Dan- I could not agree more. I took my parents to Equus for their 59th wedding anniversary last Saturday. It was their first visit. But everything was done perfectly. Deano stopped by our table and was his charming self and the food...well it just kept speaking for itself. Flawless, accompanied with flawless service. Credit to Deano for making my parents anniversary a very memorable event.

We went tonight and tried the sweetbreads for the first time based on Dan's recommendation.

They were remarkable, but the whole dish was just put together so well with the Creamed Spinach Grits and Ligonberry Veal Demi Glace. It was a great introduction to offal as he said and won't be my last.

We had a bottle of Pinot Gris that paired very nicely with the sweet breads and spinach salads to start the meal. Wife had the crab cake appetizer for her dinner. I had the spice rubbed grilled pork tenderloin and a very tasty Pinot Noir suggested by our waiter that went very well with the entree.

No room for dessert, but a memorable experience as always.
