Welcome to the Louisville Restaurants Forum, a civil place for the intelligent discussion of the local restaurant scene and just about any other topic related to food and drink in and around Louisville.
Walnuts, a rich source of the omega-3 fat, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), improve artery function after a high fat meal and may be even more important in a Mediterranean-type diet than olive oil in promoting heart health, suggests a small study from Spain (Cortes B, Nunez I, J Am Coll Cardiol).
The study, funded by the California Walnut Commission and the Spanish Ministry of Health, looked at the effects on a number of markers of cardiovascular health of adding walnuts or olive oil to a fatty meal.
Twelve healthy people and 12 patients with high cholesterol levels were randomly assigned to eat either a high-fat meal (80 g fat, 35 per cent saturated fat) that also included 40 grams of walnuts or one that included 25 grams of olive oil (30 grams = 1 ounce). After one week, the participants eating walnuts were crossed over to olive oil and visa versa.

I love walnuts and almonds and wish I could eat more of them, but they're so dang expensive!

Yes, walnuts are about $5 for a pound, or at least that is what I recently paid at Kroger. But if you only eat an ounce a day, equivalent to a small handful, that is enough to last two weeks. In that context given the health benefits they seem like a good investment.

And if you shop at Aldi as I do, you'll find walnuts are much less expensive and just as good!
Two delicious ways to get walnuts into your diet are Post Selects Banana Nut Crunch Cereal and Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey Ice Cream...

lol ray.
i try to stay away from cereals that have more than 30 ingredients and I think the ice cream would offset the health benefits of the walnuts, lol

I think the ice cream would be okay if folks would remember that a pint of Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey does NOT equal one serving...In fact, there are actually four servings in a pint...I know...I know...Easier said then done...

yes, their servings are 4 oz while most regular ice creams are 8oz. When I get those I try to make them last for three to four servings, however, it is usually more like two

Here is another guilty pleasure that includes walnuts...A co-worker of mine who loves to bake (and does it quite well I might add) will often bake birthday cakes for his friends and co-workers...He "hooked" me up with a rum cake with chopped walnuts...Man, was that cake ever so moist...O' Yeah...Talk about the best of both worlds...
