The Dreaded Charlestown Pizza Hut is gone.....

by Bryan Shepherd » Thu Jan 14, 2010 7:47 pm

For those who read this forum with any regularity, I noticed the Pizza Hut in Charlestown has closed. I don't know if they are relocating or not (probably not) but, based on the recent posts it looks as if really bad service can cause really bad results.

I hope everyone that has lost a job is able to find something else soon; though, personally, I'm not glad to see them close because of the food and service.

I'm sorry to see any business close. If you take glee from any of this, you had better watch out because you could be next. The only thing that makes sense is for the economy to thrive to the extent that chains and local can co-exist and prosper along side each other.

Precious. Makes me wonder how the nation survived its first hundred-odd years when (drum roll please) there were no chains.

Chains and locals, chains and locals, chains and locals...........

Well, lets kick this off the right way shall we.
I am proud to have opened a "local" (yes, i live right here in Charlestown) restaurant that has consistently provided quality service and food to the residents of our little community.

One of the main reasons we opened in Charlestown is that there were three chain pizza places (Dominos, Pizza Hut and Papa J's) in Charlestown all serving terrible pizza!!!
Additionally, the service I received at all of these establishments was also pretty terrible (I'll admit I haven't eaten at any of these places since we opened, so since March of 2007 they may have improved on both quality and service).

So we opened our little pizza restaurant with the goal of providing quality service and quality pizza to our customers.
Currently we employ 15 people from the surrounding area, we buy 95% or more of our produce from a local produce company, we sell a fair amount of local beer, and we even donate pretty generously to our community causes.

The question that goes beyond the "chain versus local" argument is where would you rather your money go? Back into your local economy or into the profit margins of a mega-corp?

In these tough economic times, we are happy to be welcomed and supported by our community.
We are also very well aware that it is NECESSARY to provide quality products and quality service to our community.

Speaking for myself, I am glad to see any business not providing quality service and products to their customers close.
Supporting businesses that do their business poorly is as ridiculous as using the taliban moniker in a foodie forum.

BTW - Pizza Hut relocated several of their employees from the Charlestown location to other stores.

Spend your money at a local establishment like the NABC today !!
Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. D Barry

I appreciate both Shawn and Roger's responses. I am a proud supporter of both of these guys!

I am the person who posted about Pizza Hut's treatment of the Charlestown High School Boys Soccer team. When Pizza Hut failed, CPC stepped up to the plate. I talked with David Novak, YUM Brands CEO personally and although Pizza Hut made it up to the team I believe the public backlash on top of the current economic conditions was more than they could handle.

I understand from one former managers that the "good" employees have all been offer positions in other Pizza Hut locations. I wish the employees and families of the employees of Pizza Hut in Charlestown the very best. Although there is a terrible economy and times are tough for local independent businesses, I believe CPC has had a stellar year. It just goes to show, in good times and bad if you serve good food and provide good service you can succeed. The last thing Charlestown needed when CPC opened was another Pizza places. The cream rose to the top!

You want to know what all of the hoopla is about. Cross the river and visit the CPC, it's worth the drive.

Excellent!

I think the points you make are often forgotten by people defending chains. It comes down to more than the food and being a decent value and the service being ok.

I have yet to try CPC as it is quite a haul from east Louisville, but I will make it a point to do so.

Do you deliver? I'll be in the Knobs this weekend for a card game and CPC would be a great lunch.

Could this forum survive with a 60 day moratorium on the discussion of chain restaurants? Just asking.

Sure it could. I'll refrain from attacking chains unless I'm scandalously provoked by someone else daring to defend them.
