Home Run Burger

by Pete O » Thu Jan 14, 2010 3:26 pm

Well, I found myself in the St. Matthews area at lunch time running an errand so I decided to make my maiden voyage to Home Run Burger and Fries. I can tell you for certain it won't be my last.

I went with the Lil Bacon Cheeseburger with pepper jack, grilled onions and sauteed mushrooms. I also tried the hot dog and an order of fries.

The hot dog was a large Vienna Beef dog, charred respectably on the flat top, served in a very fresh appropriately sized bun. It had "Ball Park Food" written all over it. 'Nuff Said

The fries were very good, however not piping hot and not quite crisp. It was pretty slow when I was there, so I think I was approaching the end of their life cycle in the warmer. Anyway, the flavor was still there.

As for the burger, I also found it quite good. The bun was very fresh, toasted just right and the perfect size for the burger. The beef has a very good flavor. It was cooked through, but was still juicy. The bacon had good flavor with just the right balance of crispiness and 'chewyness', and the grilled onions where 'al dente' cooked through but still had some texture. My only complaint about the burger was the sauteed mushrooms. Unless I am way off, they were canned mushroom that they heated up on the flat top. They had a fine flavor, but they took away from the freshness of the other ingredients.

Overall, I thought it was great meal and will go back (soon).

Thanks for the review Pete-O. Been meaning to give Home Run a try, so it's nice to have a "first" opinion.

I've been to both the St. Matthews and Hurstbourne stores and Hurstbourne was far superior. Both the food and service were better. The fries were soggy, the burger/hot dog buns overly dry, and the service on the slow side at the St. Matthews store. My experience was the exact opposite at the Hurstbourne store.

We've been to the Hurstbourne store several times and have been very happy with it. The burgers were fantastic. We've usually gone at night and everything was cooked when ordered. I tend to have complex orders when I'm given options and they haven't messed mine up yet!
