Louisville Pie Kitchen

by Steve Shade » Thu Jun 14, 2007 8:24 pm

Looks like Fern Creek is getting a Louisville Pie Kitchen and Ice Cream place.

Saw a sign on the place that was Whitneys Diner today .. in front of Beef O' Bradys and across from the Rite Aid on Bardstown Road in Fern Creek. No idea when opening. Looks like it is close.

There goes the diet.

Yep, they've been working on it for several months, I'm a Creeker too Steve, maybe we can meet up for some ice cream and pie (for some reason that just doesn't sound right)

Oh, and I confirmed it several months ago when they started construction by stopping and asking the construction workers. I'm an investigative foodie like that 8)

Now, the ultimate question is whether it will be successful at that location or not. For some reason, none of the previous tennants have had much success at that spot. BBQ, an ice cream shop, Soupy's, Whitney's etc. have all come and gone in relatively short amounts of time. Maybe that site is haunted??

I think they will do well at this location. I think the problems with the other tennants seem to be that the food was not good enough to go to that area, for something that was not "special". I never ate at soupy;s when it was there, but we loved Whitney's, just for us the Nally House on Preston was a bit closer and the food was comparable. However, I know many people who never go the the pie kitchen soley because they don't want to deal with the weekend traffic in the highlands, and this location will get many visits from our family and friends........can't wait to get some red velvet cake....

Also the wife and I do visit the highlands location as often as possible, but it is sometimes a pain to get to from "way out" in Okolona.....

Who doesn't love pie and ice cream? The only way I can see them failing is if customer service is shoddy. That will kill a business awfully quick.

Yes, I think they will do very well in Fern Creek also. Plus, they pretty much completly tore the building down to the frame and redid it, they did a very nice and extensive remodel and it looks nice. I live about 1.5 miles away so I'm glad they are coming to the creek.

There have been complaints on this forum about the service at the St Matthews location. I have experienced it twice and no longer go in there. Greaters is where I now take my grandkids.

Hope it is different in the Fern Creek location since I live close and have been to the Bardstown Rd location often when the last owners had it.

Just saw that they opened up another place in Southern Indiana on Veteran's Pkwy. The St. Matthews location produces such mediocre stuff, though, tht I'm not sure I even want to try it.

There is also another new location at Springhurst where Tijuana Flats was. Been there since before Derby.

That's a real shame! I've been to the bardstown rd location several times, and had great experiences each time. Haven't been to the other locations, though.

I've never encountered a problem with food or service at St Matthews. Before I moved to Jeff from that area, I frequented that location.

Louisville Pie Kitchen

by James Natsis » Mon Jun 18, 2007 3:33 pm

We also live near Fern Creek and look forward to a quality establishment like the Louisville Pie Kitchen coming to the area. We have to drive about 15-20 minutes to get something decent to eat. Fortunately, Louisville is compact enough to where one can do this without much headache. There are two shopping plazas under construction on Bardstown road between Beulah Church and the Gene Snyder. I just hope that there are a few surprises in the plans for us foodies. There almost has to be, for I can't imagine what new fastfood places they could add to the already fastfood saturated area!

There is also a branch over on Taylorsville Rd. right off the Gene Snyder (in the new Kroger Plaza). I think it' s been open since last fall. It's never very crowded and it's easy to get in and out of parking wise. We've had good experiences there.

We just tried the Pie Kitchen in southern Indiana on Veteran's Parkway. On Tuesday night they were slammin'. And actually, it was pretty good--much closer to the original Highlands location in food quality. Hubby got the Creme Brulee ice cream which had grate flavor, but was definitely grainy. He also had the Dutch apple pie and pronounced it good. I had the Chocolate Chess which was incrediably sweet. I did sneak a bite of hubby's apple pie and although good, it bore a distinct resemblance to pre-fab apple pie mix in appearance. That's my griipe with the product under the name "Homemade." Baked on the premises, OK, but no one is peeling and slicing apples by hand.

In all fairness, I was one of the people who reported problems with the St. Matthews location during its first several months of operation last year.

I saw issues with both food (the ice cream to some extent, but much more seriously the pies and cakes, seemed to move from very high quality "home made" product to a more bland and commercialized product under the new management) and, more seriously, service, which could be good but was often very bad indeed, sullen and slow-moving youngsters who acted like someone (their parents, maybe?) might have forced them to take this job, but by george, they weren't going to do it well.

In recent months both of these problems seem to have abated. The (usually) young people behind the counter have usually seem bright, intelligent and friendly - honor students have taken over from slackers and wannabe gangsters - and the ice cream, at least, has been rich, creamy and delicious. I had a little dish of mocha chip the other day that was just about as good as I've ever had.
