This Saturday: Beer Brunch at Brendan's, with NABC beers.

by Roger A. Baylor » Tue Jan 12, 2010 10:00 pm

In November, I devoted my LEO column to beer and breakfast food pairings: http://leoweekly.com/dining/mug-shots-beer-breakfast

I'm happy to report that Brendan's Public House (3921 Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews) is running with the concept this coming Saturday, January 16, in the form of a Beer Brunch with some of NABC's beers, and I'm really excited about the possibilities.

The Beer Brunch starts at 1:00 p.m. and will last until 3:00 p.m. It will consist of 4 courses, with 3 listed below and 1 yet to be determined. The menu thus far:

Tomatillo/Hoptimus Huevos Rancheros
Solidarity Baltic Porter Glazed Country Ham with Chipotle cheddar grits
Beaks Best Bread Pudding

Brendan's is limiting reservations at 25, with the cost being $30 for the food, beer, and stimulating conversation with NABC personnel in attendance, including me (The Publican). One or more of NABC's brewers will be there, too, although I can't tell you which ones at this time. Call 502.895.1212 for reservations.

Honestly, I'm not sure, but I don't think so. My best guess would be a beer sample to accompany the dishes cooked using it. NABC probably will bring a growler or two as dessert.

I just called and reserved a spot for myself. It's prepay and the manager in charge comes in @ 4pm to take those payments (Chris Toler, I assume from the poster) . At least, that's what the young lady over the phone told me a few minutes ago. Hope to see a few familiar faces!

Thanks Kyle, look forward to seeing you.

UPDATE: All three NABC brewers will be present for the brunch.

If you recall, I've advocated doing the beer breakfast at breakfast. What's a little Hoptimus before coffee, anyway?

I think starting out with something like a hefe or a wit is better, but Hoptimus would work too. Now, Im a breakfast anytime of the day kind of person, but still, if I was scheduling a beer brunch it would be at 10 or 11 AM. Hey Brendan's - whats up with that?

They don't open till 11. And, my guess, is they would like to have a more staff instead of just the openers with a table of 25 people booked early in the day.

In defense of Brendan's, and lest there be misunderstandings, I believe the basic idea is to pair beers with breakfast foods, irrespective of the time of day, because this is something seldom seen. I really applaud Brendan's for standing up to the plate (pun intended) and "forcing" me to eat my words, so to speak. I'm really looking forward to this, and remember: NABC's brewers will be there, too. It's a great chance to talk beer and relax on a Saturday.

I'd like to thank everyone involved this past weekend involved with the Beer Brunch. I've never eaten do much food in one sitting and could not stop. It was fantastic. As for specific dishes, I forgot the list of dishes. But, for certainty, there was lots of beer. :D

A picture tells a thousand words, or something like that, and to augment Kyle's description, here's the link to photos taken by John Campbell during the brunch on Saturday.

Thanks to everyone at Brendan's for a fabulous meal. We intend to stage this event again in April, and I believe that after looking at the photos, you'll want to make plans to attend.
