by Adam Smith » Fri Jan 08, 2010 2:12 pm

I'm going to the movies at 4:45, need a new spot( to me) for a quick bite beforehand. Any suggestions?

Cokos Lokos, Bingo. Somehow that place keeps slipping my mind. Thanks!

Homerun Burger and Fries

The Mexican place next to Shalimar, I feel, serves pretty good food. El Toro Restaurante Mexicano Cantina and Grill .

There are a couple BBQ places in the area. One is Famous Dave's and the other is Bruce's Smokehouse .

Went to Cocos Lokos, and it was a very disappointing lunch. I had the cuban sandwich, which I felt was average at best. It seemed dry to me, and the ham in it was very fatty. The fries, whatever they were made of, were pretty good though. Sandwich and a beer plus tip was $15!!!

But the poor service is really what stood out. I was one of 3 people in the place and my waitress seemed like she didn't have time to deal with me. After I placed my order I saw her TWICE... once when she brought my food and once when she brought me a to go box and the check. She didn;t make eye contact with me once. No offer to refill my drink, no checking how my meal was, no "Is there anything else?" etc etc. I'm very disappointed, I had high hopes for this place.

Very odd ... we went to Cocos Lokos for lunch yesterday (were there from about 1 to 2 p.m.) and it seemed like everyone in the room was getting excellent and friendly service. I had the Cubano with boniato fries and liked it - in fact, the last quarter is warming up for my lunch right now. Just goes to show how different people can have different experiences, I guess. Very odd about the server, though. It sounds like she underwent a personality transplant.

Mr. Smith I am very very sorry about your bad experience at our restaurant. After a lot of harping and some tough love (which was very effective on me and taught to me by Mrs. Martinez or Tina and Ms. Cahill to those who know) I thought I had shaped the servers up very quickly in our almost three short months. There is no excuse for your bad lunch and assure you your next visit will be more pleasing. I thought I saw you in here yesterday Robin, thank you for the visit. Just to let everyone know our lunch is starting to speed up, in that I mean your food will be coming out faster, so we can get you in and out if your on a time limit.

Thanks for everyone's support ,

Robin, how was the ham in your Cuban sandwich? Mine was real fatty, so much so I had to remove sever pieces from the sandwich. BTW, I was there around 3:45, just missed you guys :D

Rick, thanks for your comments and I was in no way trying to bad mouth your place, just giving a quick review. I have heard many good things about the restaurant and I think maybe I had it built up in my head that the meal was going to be really good and was just a bit let down. I'll definitely be back to try other items on the menu I had my eye on. Also I should have mentioned that when I left 3 or 4 employees thanked me for coming in so I can tell for the most part that they appreciate the customer,

It would have been fun to have an impromptu offline!

Okay, to be honest, I did not open the sandwich to examine the ham, but I can't honestly tell you that the ham bothered me. I expect a little fat on ham, but it didn't really grab my attention. Good flavor. It was really the chopped roast pork in it that caught my attention. It was sort of a chopped relish kind of thing, and most South Florida Cubanos in my experience just have crisp pickle rounds tossed on. I like that. But overall, the flavor was good and the crisp, pressed/toasted bread was fine.

I didn't open the sandwich until i took a bite and couldn't get all the way through it. You;re right though, the pork was good and the bread was good and crispy on the outside from the press. Like I said, I'll be back.

I can't get past the Lomo Saltado, the first item on the lunch menu. I think it is one of the top 10 tastiest dishes in town. Love it. And I've always had good service there, too, including once with Rick himself. I'm not making excuses for them, for there is none, but 3:45 might be sort of a "tween" time, where things aren't quite as sharp as normal. Should have freed up th server for better attention, though. Give them another chance.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
