Need Help (Farmers Market)

by Carol Crenshaw » Wed Jan 06, 2010 3:04 pm

I was hoping someone would be able to help me. I would like to sell my baked goods at the Farmers Market beginning in the spring but don't know where to find commercial kitchen space to bake. Does anyone know of anyplace that rents space? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You might be able to use a church kitchen. I have known of other market vendors in the past who able to go this route. Also I would check with your area AG extension agent. What market will you be vending at?
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Thanks John. I'm new to this so I don't know what you mean when you say AG extension agent. I was hoping to sell at the farmers market on Bardstown Rd.

Does this concept of "production kitchen" rental seem to be something a lot of folks would utilize? Just getting a feel for the idea.

Isn't there a production kitchen concept on Market or Main or Butchertown somewhere? Seems as though I heard that the people who do the bourbon salt products were renting space at on in that basic area?????

He's (probably) referring to the cooperative extension service. Here's a link to the Jefferson County one: http://ces.ca.uky.edu/jefferson/

I think this would be a great idea as well...there was a little discussion on this topic on another thread. Here's a link...

I'm certain something like this could only have a positive effect :D !

I would love to see a incubator kitchen concept come to Louisville. I believe there is one in Madison and Bloomington. It would be a huge help to many of us who cook/bake some amazing items that people are always saying, "you should sell this...", but without a commercial kitchen we just can't make that happen. I've always wondered why the regulations are different from state to state. In some states my home kitchen could be used with a health inspection - not all the regulations of a commercial kitchen.

Oh that would be so wonderful! I would definitely be in line to rent kitchen time.

Wow, wouldn't it be awesome to see a complex devoted to culinary arts like the Mellwood Art center, but with all kitchen studios. Just a thought.

I thought there was one where the Mayan Gypsy was next to White Oak? 624 E. Market?

Heather, I think it's a great idea! I've been thinking about selling my baked goods at the farmers market for awhile but the only thing holding me back right now is a place to bake.

Carol, I was asking the same questions as well last spring. I wanted to sell my pies at Beargrass. I was not able to find any affordable kitchen space even after following all the leads given to me by folks on the forum. I did, however, stumble upon a possibility a month or two ago. Try The Sweet Shoppe on Plantside Drive in Jtown. Conway's Cake Supplies moved in there along with a specialty cake baker. They were looking to rent out kitchen space and were relatively reasonably priced. I believe Conway's has now been purchased by the baker and is now just known as the Sweet Shoppe.

If anyone decides to start up a kitchen cooperative, I'm in! Love the idea.
