What did I just eat?

by JustinHammond » Tue Jan 05, 2010 6:36 pm

I'm hoping someone can identify this mystery fruit?.

I bought it at Choi's Asian Market and the lady working couldn't remember the name. I ask her if it was durian and she said no. It is a large, brown, football shaped fruit with small spikes on the outside. Inside is spongy, with pockets of yellow flesh, and finger like areas. The lady told me to only eat the yellow parts. It tastes very tropical (like a mango) and has a somewhat chewy texture.

Any ideas? I've never tasted Durian, but it sure looks like one.

I don't know what Durian smells like. I liked the smell if that matters.

It's close, but durian is spiky, rather than bumpy. I wonder if it's some milder variety, or a hybrid?

Also, it's known as the "corpse fruit" because it has an aroma similar to a rotting body covered in rotting garlic. So, unless you're trying to tell us something, Justin - I doubt it was a true durian. Could it have been a breadfruit? I've eaten fresh durian before (well, "tasted", not "eaten") - I can't believe anyone could say "I liked the smell". But nothing's impossible.

I like eating dead vampires and Marsha wants to hold it against me!

The smell is sweet, just like the fruit tastes. The entire fruit was about the size of 2 footballs, I just took pics of a small section. After some more research I can say it is not breadfruit or durain.

That is it. I suggest getting over to Chio's and getting one. It is delicious.

I thought jackfruit early on, but all the jackfruit I'e ever seen (one summer when I lived in Hawaii and one year when I lived outside Toronto) was green. Justin's fruit looks brown.

Across the street from Sonic, between Thortons and Pennzoil. While you're in the area I would stop by the Comfy Cow for some ice cream. I think you could find something that would go great with the Jackfruit.

It was brown and the fruit was a deeper yellow than the pictures online.

I guessing you have a Bell's Glass in your window sill and a bottle of Stoli on your countertop also.

:D Lets play "I spy" in Justin's kitchen. I spy: A Bells Pub glass, a bottle of vodka, a small bottle of crab/shrimp boil, a weather gauge, 3 bananas and a candle. 8)

This is one bloody interesting thread. I have nothing to contribute other than that.
