Has anyone been to any of the Our Best Restaurant's? Just was interested in your thoughts on the food and customer service.

Been to the newest on in Jeffersonville a few times...The fried chicken had suffered under a warming lamp too long, and the sides are bland. Service was alright, pies are decent.

My brother lives across the street from the original in Smithfield. I've never really liked the place. Canned veggies, gloppy gravy, canned fruit filling in the cobblers etc. When I do go I stick with the fried chicken, it is usually pretty good and fresh. I am addicted to the corn cakes (hoe cakes?) though, they are yummy.

We usually eat at the one on Preston, and I will agree that the fried chicken is the best choice. I like the corn cakes too but for some reason they are almost always burned. The last time I asked for more and they were burned too. We actually haven't been in a long time due to the "bland sides" issues too.

Hubby likes Our Best in Jeff. It's "okay", but IMHO nothing spectacular. Puts me in mind of the old "Po Folks" restaurants from back in the 1980s.

Our Best's breakfast, however, is pretty good. We usually stop in on Sunday morning on the way to church. They've also got a M-F special called the "Big M" for $3.99. Bacon, sausage, two eggs, hash browns and a huge pancake.

Watch for an adhesive coupon stuck to the top of your C-J for half off on a second meal.

The best one (IMO) remains the original in Smithfield. They are usually busy on weekends (esp. Sunday afternoons, when the church crowd blows in) so expect a wait - but it's worth it.

Always had a good meal there - the fried chicken is among the best restaurant-made chicken I've tasted, and customer service has always been friendly and prompt. Plus, it's not unusual for the owner (or a member of his family) to drop by and chat for a moment. Their desserts consist mostly of cobblers and cream pies - excellent.

The only other restaurant (in this region) that is comparable would be the Loveless Cafe, near Franklin, Tenn (south of Nashville).

They are what Cracker Barrel strives for, but will probably never become.

I've never been but my parents seem to prefer Cracker Barrel over Our Best Restaurant. They said that Our Best Restaurant was about as good as Bob Evans, which they also think is inferior to Cracker Barrel. I'll have to stop in & try it for myself. The "Big M" sounds like a good deal.

Remember, the "Big M" breakfast for $3.99 is Mondays through Fridays only.

I was disappointed with the place. It was nothing special. The thing that got to me first was that they put margarine packs on the table instead of better. Cheap, crappy margarine. I've never met a 'real' country cook who didn't use real food.

I agree about the bland sides. Canned green beans and one time I was convinced the mashed potatoes were instant, from a box!
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

They are. I asked one time and the server said that they were instant but you will not be able to tell the difference.. right. I mean come on...How hard is it to make real mashed potatoes?

Not a huge Cracker Barrel fan, but I like it better than Our Best.
