I don't see "free" mentioned in the article.

Maybe the glass itself is free....

Liquor laws in different states are something else. Unless I have a tasting going on, I could get a fine if someone was walking around the store with any opened alcohol. We can't even have a draft system in the store in Indiana.

Didn't you use to have a bar in the back?

You can buy a glass of any of their on tap beers. They also have containers to buy beer in (can't think of the name).

I was under the impression that giving away alcohol was illegal, I thought you had to charge something like a penny. If you can give away alcohol it seems like I'm shopping at the wrong stores.

Either way, it looks like I'm having a glass of beer this weekend at Whole Foods Market. :)

According to the guys in the beer business on this forum, beer can not be sold below cost.

That is correct Justin. Some states have a penny rule. But Kentucky has a "cost" rule. You cannot give away or sell below your wholesale cost.

I've always wondered if there is a sample exception. Does anyone know? Because most places will give you a sample (a taste) of something so you can decide whether to order it or not. Seems like technically it would violate the law...

State liquor laws are incredibly stupid. I'm just glad the ffeds unified the drinking age at least (by withholding highway funds). (I had high school friends who died driving to Wisconsin from Illinois when the ages were 18 and 21 respectively. It was pretty common)

I suggest that you all spend your money at a LOCAL business.

Yes, giving away any amount of beer in KY to a customer is a technical violation of the law (WF is giving away the glass).

If you just want a free glass - may i suggest any number of "free pint glass" events taking place at several LOCAL businesses across the metro (Brenndans, Rockys, Flannigans, etc).

ANYWAY,

I hope this new thing at Whole Food works out for them ok. They seem to be pretty eager about it.
