was delightful, as always.
After cleaning the closet and bagging up a bunch of "I'm not going to wear this/this doesn't fit/where'd this come from?" stuff to drop off at Goodwill on Broadway, we popped into The Cafe for a late lunch. At 2:30 only half the dining room was populated, so we got a table right away. If you've ever lunched at The Cafe on a regular weekday, you know how slammed they usually are.
Starting with a basket of warm bread, hot tea for DH and an iced mango tea for me we placed our orders. DH has become something of a chicken salad sandwich aficionado, having ordered such all over Metro. He proclaimed this to be one of the best and enjoyed the crisp apple bits in this version. It was a bit messy, however, being completely overstuffed. Not that that's a bad thing, really.
My guilty pleasure is the pimento cheese on walnut bread. Should I be eating a whallop of cheese? Probably not. Is it really, really tasty? Oh yes, yes it is. And not full of that cottage cheese filler I notice some places doing. That's just cheating, in my book.
We both enjoyed the multi-bean salad as sides. Dressed in a light vinaigrette, the many varieties of beans were nothing at all like that three bean salad from my childhood memories.
And in an amusing touch, the register receipt prints out suggested tip calculations at the 15% and 20% level for the math challenged among us.
With a 20% tip the total bill was $18 and change.
This is a consistent, solid place that we always enjoy. The food is well prepared, easy on the wallet, service prompt and courteous and surroundings, well, interestingly kitchy. Unfortunately the owner refused to let us buy a historic door that was part of a display.
