It's a tradition to be sure, but wouldn't you say, Annemarie, that it kind of fell out of the foodie stratosphere years ago and was mainly known for its atmosphere? When we lived in NYC, the only time we ever ate there was when my mother came to visit and insisted that we take her there. Honestly, it kind of struck me as a tourist trap, but maybe I was in a bad mood that day.

I just got back from NYC and they were taking reservations for the auction.

Couldn't agree more, Robin. I doubt most will miss it.

This: http://www.amazon.com/Tavern-Green-Kay- ... 611&sr=8-2

is a pretty good cookbook, with nice stories about the history of Tavern, its day-to-day operations, etc., and is full of great pictures.

My mom fell in love with Tavern on her only trip to New York a few years ago, and bought this cookbook recently after hearing about it closing.

I believe the lease has been picked up by the man who runs the boathouse in Central Park and will reopen later this year. It just won't have all of Warner LeRoy's over the top decor.

This is very sad news. To me, Tavern on the Green held tons of memories, not just mine, but so many people who have dined, danced and enjoyed the decadence of a New York Tradition for decades. When visitors came to down, Tavern was a destination for either cocktails or dinner! It was always such a delight walking through the park during the Holidays and seeing the trees and restaurant AGLOW! Tavern on the Green will be missed...!

Grew up in NYC, never been to Tavern on the Green!

Had my first date with my husband at Windows on the World though. Soooooo glad I did that.
