Columbus, OH restaurant forum

by Lonnie Turner » Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:15 pm

Forgive me if I asked this last year or the year before, but there could always be news.
Is there a blog / forum similar to this in Columbus? It would really come in handy for researching a bit before we got visit my wife's mom periodically. In particular this time we are looking for someplace open Christmas evening for supper. We thought we'd call around to Asian places but a web forum would probably get better results.
Thanks in advance.

Lonnie, my Dad spends a good part of the in Columbus, and so we visit two or three times a year. I've looked numerous times, but cannot find anything like Hotbytes there.

I wouldn't call Columbus a "foodie" town, per se. There are numerous outstanding restaurants, but I don't get the feeling that the people are quite as passionate about it there as we are here.

Some recommendations, in the mid- to upscale range, are G. Michael's Bistro (probably my favorite, and in a great location in German Village), L'Antibes, Handke's Cuisine, and the Refectory (very $$$).

I haven't been, but a Haiku Poetic Food and Art gets pretty good reviews.

El Vaquero on Riverside is pretty good for Mexican - not exactly super-authentic, but very solid along the lines of Sol Aztecas.

It's disappointing how few cities have had independent communities like HotBytes and the forum form ... maybe further testimony to the support of serious food-lovers making this such a good restaurant town?

Looking at Fred's links, though, this one jumps out as potentially useful, even with no forum:

Looks like the rough equivalent of Louisville Originals. You won't find any negative reviews or problem reports from consumers, but to their credit, they've got good info about all member restaurants and a frequently updated blog.

Rich's cousin lives in Gahanna and we had a family dinner at Mezzo there in September. It was very good and the service staff was very understanding of another relative wanting to watch the OSU game, they seemed to time the service to the commercials! They took care of almost 20 of us with grace.

We appreciate the input so far. I was afraid of that, no Hotbytes equivalent. I did bookmark the Columbus Originals. I always tell people who visit and are not very familiar with Louisville that it is rich dining territory. It never ceases to amaze me when I read the local papers at my mom-in-law's and they survey locals on places to eat and they mention almost only chains. Less likely to happen in Louisville, at least to the degree in Columbus. Makes my blood boil but enough of that...
We've been to Schmidt's and Lindey's and like them a lot. Schmidt's last time we were there a month ago has a "house" dark beer that I had with sauerbraten and it was fantastic for my taste. Found out it is brewed for them nearby at a place called the Elevator(?) Brewing Co., apparently a local micro. We'll have to check that out, too.
We also love a little place near my mom-in-law's in Dublin called the Skyliner Diner.
