If moved, wat restaurant &/or food would ya miss most?

by Jim Greenbrier » Sun Jun 10, 2007 7:24 am

.
... I ve been away from Louisville for many years.

Often, I have a craving for tastes and places from years ago... When visiting Louisville, I go straight to those places if possible.

Oddly enough, the older I get the more I crave the food I was raised on. Fortunately in my case, I can now afford most places and foods, but I often prefer eating fried bologna, hot dogs, hamburgers, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches !

After many years on a corporate unlimited expense account, my tastes range from White Castles (any where) to the Tour d'Argent (Paris,Fr).

BUT, I have missed WC s, Mazzoni Oysters, Mike Linnigs, and the "Old" Cunninghams the most !.. I know it s awfull... :)

I would miss my occasional late evening stops at the Bristol on Bardstown Road to end my craving for Green Chili Wontons but there are so many restaurants that I enjoy, I would miss them all. I do miss the now closed Millers Cafeteria (short weekly lunches with my father), Melrose Inn for breakfast and sweet childhood memories toddling into the Prospector for pizza after stomping those divets at Hayes Kennedy Park when Polo was not quite the spectator sport in Louisville back in the 70's.

I lived in Nevada for almost four years, and this is what I missed:

-Not only those great Lenten fish fries, but a good place to get a fried fish sandwich any day of the year. There was nothing like Stan's, there was nothing like Mike Lening's.

-Louisville-style casserole pizza (Lord help me, I love 'em so).

-Cumberland Brews.

I also missed the Highlands and strong, inexpensive pours of bourbon.

Missing......and FISH SANDWIHES

by Jim Greenbrier » Sun Jun 10, 2007 11:44 am

.........the subject repeats itself over and over...i.e., Louisville and it s fish sandwiches....

My career required travel to most major cities of the world and many, too many, minor ones....Guess what??...........No fish sandwiches like Louisville...

You d think other river cities like Cincinnati, St Louis, Pittsburg, etc - would be comparable....NOPE..... It s 'slim pickin s" out there !!

Wonder why??

Diamante for the food, friendliness, and the chance to have a really nice dinner in an old Service Station. I'm a history nut. Ramsi's for it's vegetarian dishes, friendliness, and its real quaintness. The Gasthaus for...oh my...
besides the wonderful food I like its Germanness, from the decor to the Servers who can tell me how to pronounce words in German, to the lovely Mrs. Greipel who, as a German Frau should, speaks in a very authoritative manner when such is needed. I'd like to go to all three this week but the budget will not permit such mad, wonderful indulgence! :D

I'd definitely miss Mike Linnig's, and Ferd Grisanti's.

I've been dying to try the Gasthaus for years! My mom and dad love the place, and rave about how good it is. You'd think that my hubby would want to go, given that he IS half German. Alas, no. He HATES German food. I'll drag him there, kicking and screaming, if I have to.

Also half German. If you can't get him to Gasthaus (great place) try Erikas (Hurstbourn Lane close to I=64). Good German food but he may not realize it and probably will like it. If that doesn't work, take him to Flabbys in Germantown. Good ole boy place. Fine group of cheap German items. Also Mazzonis oysters etc.

Took my first ex wife to an extinct German restaurant downtown. She said that she was surprised that this was the kind of food she grew up on, but did not realize it was German. Mother came from north of Evansville .. Haubstadt .. Daumstadt .. Elderfeld (sp)

:) I'm a vegetarian and I still love both the Gasthaus and Erika's.
I always advise my Server that I am a vegetarian so they can take good care of me! There is usually chicken also on German restaurant menus since I am told that chicken was used a lot in Germany. My son has tried the Stroganoff (?) and Rouladen. Husband has tried so many dishes I forget except he loved the Beef Goulash. Altho, my husband Jim, and son Billy eat meat and love the food at both, the desserts would bring us back anyway. My husband has never tried any of them except the Apple Strudel. He loves it too much to go there and not have it! Erika had two desserts on her menu at one time and said she made them with Splenda. I wonder if she still does. They were incredible!

Now that I have just moved from Jeffersonville to Jeffersontown, I know two things that I already miss(but will still be able to get, albeit involves a pretty good hoof to get to now).
Clarksville Seafood and that Southern Indiana favorite since 1956, Pizza King

Heather, The Gasthaus has two or three vegetarian entrees. I usually have the spatzle and vegetables. There was a mushrooms in sauce on
spatzle but I'm not sure if it is still on their menu. Probably is. It sounds odd for a vegetarian, but I don't like mushrooms. Every question I asked, the Server either answered or went to ask the Chef, Mr. Greipel, I think. The soups have a meat base of some kind. The red cabbage is seasoned with meat. I recently gave up poultry and so I had Chicken Ragout for several years. I have to say that I do not feel as if I miss anything. The Spatzle and vegetables is very good. The house salad is good. The desserts are fabulous! If, and when you go, be sure you depend on your Server to help you select what is really vegetarian so you can enjoy a wonderful dinner! Barb T :D
