Amusing beer list

by Paul Mick » Mon Dec 14, 2009 3:13 pm

I'll save you the anecdote about how I found this website, but suffice to say Village Pourhouse is a pub in NYC.

Take a look at the fancy scrolling menu yourself.

http://www.pourhousenyc.com/whats_on_tap.php

Just when I started to think that their menu didn't look awful, they toss in another macro to essentially stab me in the eye.

Seriously, who has both Bud Light and Chimay Blanc on tap? They should make up their mind already.

You need to have something for people who dislike beer to drink.

Thus the Chimay Blanc.

Huh? Chimay Tripel (blanc - white) is one of the best beers in the world!

You're saying that is for people who dislike beer? I don't think many beer geeks, including people on this forum like me or Roger or many others, would agree with you.

Bud lite is for people who want to look like they're drinking beer, but actually drink foul-tasting beer flavored water.

Decent tap selection. They could do better, but good enough. Too many mediocre beers for the masses, but I'm sure they look at what sells.

I won't begrudge them (too much) having one or two lite beers on tap, but I really feel like they went overboard. Really how different is Asahi from Foster's from Bud Lite? And an Ice beer? Really?

No Nimbus, actually what I was implying (in a round about way) was that a persons choice of alcoholic libation is just that...a personal choice. If you or any other "beer geek" want to include Chimay on your list of the "best beers in the world", well that's fine but please do so with the knowledge that doing so doesn't necessarily make you "right" and people who would disagree "wrong". It simply means that you have an opinion (something you are certainly entitled to).

In other words, if sniffing bottle caps and talking in hushed tones at the corner table while comparing the "finish" of the latest bourbon barrel-cask conditioned-pumpkin/raisin-rainbow-stout is your thing, then hell elevate that pinky finger, clink some glasses and have at it...On the other hand if a friend of mine wants to show up at my house with a 12 pack of "Bud" and proceed to swill a few cold ones on the screen porch, well that's fine too. Seriously, ya'll need to stop lumping people who make choices other than the ones you would make and/or promote as some kind of uneducated mouth breather.

<note: is it just me or am I in a really pissy mood today...must be the air out here in OKC>

Actually Paul, that's probably a good business move...Aside from Micro/Pubs like NABC, BBC, etc (who have a vested interest in promoting their product and only their product) why wouldn't someone want to carry the widest possible selection and thus appeal to the widest possible range of clientele.

You realize NABC didnt have the "widest possible range" well before they had their own product, right?

Actually, it was very wide, it just didnt make it to light beers, for example.

Roger realized that being niche and appealing to your demographic is more important (and more profitable) than appealing to everyone.

Let's be honest. If you're gonna have Corona on draft, you almost HAVE to have Corona Light. Your list would be out of balance otherwise. Same with Heineken and Heineken Light. Oh, that was sarcasm, in case it doesn't read very well in print. :)

Also, that list isnt that wide ranging. a half dozen caribbean yellow lagers, a half dozen asian yellow lagers, a dozen american yellow lagers -- not really wide ranging.

You can keep you Bud lite and your Chimay, or pretty much any Belgian as far as I am concered. Neither are my taste. Give me a bucket of hops or roasted barley and I'm happy.

I agree. Everyone thinks their taste buds are the greatest, me included. However, if my buddy wants to show up at my place with a 12 pack of Bud, that's fine. If he wants to stay very long he better damn sure have something different for me, maybe a growler of Hoptimus.

Technically I know you're right. Not everyone can be an iconoclast.

Nevertheless, I do like to poke fun at them! :D

Doesn't Nachbar usually have one tap dedicated to old style or pbr or something like that? And Flanagans has a couple of taps for bud light style beer.

It is a double-edged sword. Think of all the money some of the local places (BBC and NABC come to mind) lose that refuse to serve lite (Macro) beers. I have a few friends that refuse to go to these places because they can't get a Coors or Bud. Not only are the local brewpubs not getting beer and food sells from lite beer drinkers they are not getting them from others in our group that love the local beer. We end up going to a place that has a mix of both.

Hmmmmmmm....Being "niche and appealing to your demographic"...OK, I'll buy that as a marketing strategy (or in Roger's case lifestyle), not so sure I'll buy the "and more profitable" part. Not saying I disagree (and hey, profits aren't everything when you're trying to create a brand or atmosphere), just saying I haven't seen any facts that would allow me to come to the same conclusion.

As a case in point we were out last summer with a relatively large group of friends (12 to be exact). We had our designated driver laid on and left the house with the idea of enjoying a full day (and night) of good company, good food and more than our fair share of liquid refreshments. Because two or three members of our party do not enjoy craft beer in the least, NABC, BBC, Cumberland Brews, etc were not included on the days itinerary...and thus did not benefit in any way from what in all likelihood was the better part of $12-1500 dollars spent that day. So, no, I'm not prepared to buy into the "more profitable" concept just yet.
