Overpriced Pizza

by Ellen P » Sat Dec 12, 2009 12:05 pm

Stunned. We tried a longtime Louisville pizza restaurant for the first time.
Saw the price of the small that we ordered. Knew it was hugely expensive but expected a topping full pizza. We ordered whichever one has everything on it.
First mistake. We didn't specify what kind of crust we like - we prefer thin - nor were we asked.
It was doughy and thick, undercooked. Yes there were alot of different toppings - maybe 10. But not the quantity we expected after eating Mama Bearnos for years or our most recent fav - the refrigerator at NABC.
$28!!! 3 times the cost of a comparable deli pizza.
And the place was packed.
I guess it is just us. We don't like underdone, skimpily topped $28 small pizzas.
When walking to our car, a pizza competitor drove up and asked us about our experience. He certainly picked the right couple to ask! He said he couldn't believe the business the place does and the prices they charge. We agreed. He assumed it was East Enders with too much money.
I expect people have gotten pizza mostly through delivery in the past decades so eating pizza out is a treat.
I will say we had very nice service. Good side salads. (Only 1 local beer. Skimpy beer list).
We might go back for sandwiches or pastas but never pizza.
AND, this is the stunner, they gave us $20 off our meal - we had a total of 3 beverages also. We left our server $10 and felt that was fair. We didn't expect that. Didn't ask for it. We just told our server that we were disappointed - we still would have tipped 20%. (The table next to us left without eating because the pizza took too long.)
So, I am not going to slam the restaurant. But does anyone else have a problem with the cost/quality of a pizza like this?

$28 for a small pizza!!! I would expect it to have shaved gold on it for that price. Ridiculous and so unfair that they were packed. I expect the pizza competitor who asked for your opinion is feeling (and in my opinion justly) pretty pissed off.

Well I'll take a stab at it that it was Impellizerri's..... We enjoyed our pizza there last time but we both had sticker shock at the prices they charge for their pizza. I don't think we enjoyed it "enough" to legitimize paying that much for just that, pizza. If I'm wrong about the location, all apologies.

Brian, you beat me to the punch (or stab, in this case)... got the same sticker shock at impellizerri's earlier this year - upper $20's for a less than mediocre small pizza. their quality seems to have gone downhill while the prices have gone up. too many better (and less expensive) options to ever go back.

Honestly? No. I'm not sure about anyone else, but a small deep-dished pizza and several Louisville places = Medium to large Thin crust any day of the week. I eat maybe 1 1/2 pieces from a deep dish before done; maybe 2. Thin Crust? I'd be able to eat four or five. To me, trying to equate a deep-dish pizza to a thin crust pizza in price is a little puzzling; since one will be more likely to eat less and buy a smaller pizza.

HOWEVER, I'm not a huge fan of paying this much for any sized pizza.

If that's the price on the menu and people are willing to pay it, then I don't see how this situation is unfair.

If the product doesn't match the price, then people are suckers or the situation will self-correct with time.

I LOVE Wick's pizza. I think it is great.
Earlier this summer, Wick's was absolutely PACKED (per normal) and I had a super hungry kiddo with me. We went to Impellizerri's because it was not as busy, but had heard the pizza was good. After looking at the menu, I couldn't afford (I could, just wouldn't) to buy a pizza plus the garlic cheese bread for the kiddo. The prices are HORRIBLE.

My favorite pizza restaurant in town is Frascelli's which is located in Crestwood. Their pizza is the closest to a NY or Philly style in town. Their product is a good value and the quality is always consistent. The menu is large enough to accomodate a group and the family atmosphere is welcoming. I haven't seen this place mentioned on this forum, but in my opinion their pizza is the best in town.

best in town

what town? Crestwood?

It can't be the best in town in Louisville if it's in another town.

Anyone know which long time Louisville place the OP is actually referring in her original post? Or, all we just bashing Impellizerri's for the heck of it.

Either way, I love Impellizzeri's. Best pizza in town, in my opinion.

$28 dollars does seem like a lot for a pizza but in defense of this unnamed local establishment...I was recently "on the road" and in the position of having a choice between going out for another fast food meal or having a pizza delivered to my hotel room. Always looking to throw my support behind the local brand I chose Papa Johns over Dominos and Pizza Hut...A "P.J". medium pizza with Pepperoni and Jalapenos (which I discovered too late that they forgot to put on) came to a whopping 16.50...a $3.50 tip for the driver to come out on a rainy night and I was out 20 bucks for a pizza that was absolutely GARBAGE.

If I were to ever order another PJ pizza (which I have NO intention of doing) I will (A) order one of their "specials" and (B) Make sure the order is correct before the delivery person leaves.

Hey Melissa, I like Fraschelli's too! We went there a couple of times after a session at the Shooting range in Crestwood!

Whoa...a woman who knows how to shoot. Sets my little firing pin all aquiver 8)

I'd have to agree with you about Frachelli's. It's not quite world class N.Y. style pizza but still really-really tasty. They also have some pretty good sammich's.
