Owners - please stick to your hours

by Eliza W » Thu Dec 10, 2009 10:16 pm

I was recently all set to meet a couple of girlfriends and their kids at a local place, and when I arrived, no one was there. I waited for my friends for about ten minutes, and during that time, several people walked up, looked perplexed, and left.

When one friend arrived, she said that it was the second time she had tried to meet someone at this place only to find it unexpectedly closed. She said she won't try again.

I like this place very much. It's an asset to the community. I also understand that things happen. With a small local place, one employee sleeping in can mean a late opening. Still, when unexplained closings become a habit, you'll lose customers. My friend is one, but there could easily be others.

Please, try to stay open during posted hours...Louisville needs its local businesses.

Last Friday about 12:30p I passed by Quills and Heine Bros to go to Rays. I park and go to the door and their closed. That's the third time I went there and they were closed. I know Nimbus is on here and like his place but think the OP has a good point, customer perception is important. I'm only sharing this to be helpful and give some customer feedback.

From the other side of the fence:
Bank Street Brewhouse has never been open on Monday. We have a big sign by our front door directing our potential customers to other downtown New Albany dining establishment that are open on Monday. We still have people show up every Monday looking for food & beer. :?:

This happened to us very recently at the Bristol in Jeffersonville. We checked online, we had over an hour before they closed, almost two hours. We arrived and the door was already locked but there were still workers inside.

David,

Speaking of Mondays, I never knew some places were closed. Is it because they are smaller establishments and people need a night off?

Not to speak for David, but you hit the nail on the head. Since restaurants are almost invariably open on Friday and Saturday nights (and these are generally the busiest nights of the week), Sunday and Monday are often the days off for restaurant staff. Closing Monday makes economic sense, too, as earlier in the week is usually the slowest time. If you'll check around, you'll find that many, if not most, sit-down restaurants close Mondays. This is certainly true of locally owned places, and it wouldn't surprise me if some high-end chains in particular do the same.

Yes, we and most restaurants are closed Mondays because it is the slowest day/night of the week, but that is consistently when we service industry types (at least the older non partying ones) want to go out to be waited on by some other schlepp. Still miss Baxter being open on Mondays. But sales prove that it is the best choice for small biz. Christopher @ NEC did strike a nice balance by being open Mon 8-2, and then closing for dinner. Thus not wasting the labour and food on a slow evening, but still scoring the folks looking for a lunch spot.

Apologies Brian,

Yes, our hours have been a bit spotty recently. I've only got one employee and I'm teaching also (U of L). The one employee has now gone out of state for the holidays, so I'm solo. Fortunately, just gave my last final exam, so just a bit of grading to do and then I can focus on the shop.

Of course, there is plentiful coffee within a couple blocks, but thanks for wanting to come here at least. Should be all back to normal within a week.

(We usually just have one person running the store, so yeah, if they don't show then we're in trouble. I have fired people for No Call No Shows before. In a bigger place it isn't as much of an issue. But for a small place it can mean you're closed)

I dont know how many times I tried to go to Clifton's on whatever day it is they are closed (Tuesday?) before I learned, although apparently Ive forgotten again (this was mostly late 90s/early 00s). It was good for the Rover's business.

Arg, we fell victim to this on Saturday. Tried to take my dad by for some french press at 10:30, but no one was home. Another time, hopefully. We ended up at the Douglas Heine Bros. instead.
