Comfort food, comfort scene for an icy day: Where?

by Robin Garr » Thu Dec 10, 2009 1:30 pm

Tell us your favorites for dining when it's windy and sub-freezing cold. A fireplace (L&N?) comes to mind, but certainly isn't mandatory. But I'm thinking about a cozy place to warm up with hearty fare in a comfortable setting. Tell us your favorites!

Cumberland Brews, habanero salsa and bison chili w/ a Nitro Porter... upstairs dining room is cozy

Definitely Irish Rover. Nice pint o' Guinness, maybe some leek & potato soup or some Guinness Beef Stew. Love that Coleman's Mustard as well - put that on some scotch eggs or the toasted specials - awesome.

Double Ditto, when I think of winter comfort food, I always think of the Rover. Bangers and Mash, and a pint!

Thanks to all! I actually had the Rover in mind even before it became the consensus pick. Shanagarry fish cakes and Guinness beef stew made a great warming dinner on an icy night, with a half-pint of Bell's Two Hearted for my bride with the fish, and a Guinness for me with the stew. Now that NABC has a good dark on the list and Browning's has its St. Hildegard Helles, it was *very* tempting to drink locavore, but we ended up deciding to go with the old classics. With my dish in particular, I wanted to drink the dark brew the stew was made with.

No way, far from it. That's some kind of remoulade, with celery, herbs, and I don't know what else - SO tasty, but nothing like Coleman's. Coleman's is a very strong horsderadish mustard that comes in little 4oz jars (maybe smaller?) And it's "mustard yellow" in color. It lights you up almost as strong as a wasabi, and it's a British classic condiment. It's sold in powder form at most grocery stores and you add water to it. I slather it thickly on just about anything I order at the Irish Rover - especially the complimentary soda and sourdough breads with real butter pats.

Jackie, I know that remoulade you're talking about. We used it at Deitrich's when Lon Durbin was chef. He was chef at Bristol in the begining years. I think you had it at North End one time. I can post recipe if you all would like. I use it everywhere I go!!

If it is cold and drizzily (like Tuesday was) or if I'm not feeling well, I want C3 from Vietnam Kitchen.

I don't think of the Rover as comfort food at all. I do love their lamb cabbage rolls and the soda bread, but most things are way under seasoned (mainly salt) for my taste. When I think of comfort food, I think of things that I don't have to do a thing to.

I worked with Lon at Langtry's. What ever happened to him?

Oh, and I'll add my vote to Irish Rover for cold weather ambiance and comfort food. I miss Vic Station too with their cozy little cubbies.
