Who serves venison?

by Adam Smith » Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:58 pm

I used to get it all the time and cook it myself when my mother worked at Kingsley's. Seemed every year she would get meat from the hunters who brought their kills in to be processed.

I can't recall ever seeing it on a menu. I was just wondering if anyone knows where/when I can find it at a restaurant?

If the local German restaurants don't offer it, they should. That's a classic German winter favorite. Slow roasted venison, red cabbage, Preiselbeeren and pears, dumplings. Oh my.

I've seen it at Lilly's before - but it's been a couple of years.

I recall Corbett's having an outstanding venison dish at their opening, but they change menus frequently to take advantage of seasonabl availability and freshness. Might be worth a call to see if it's on the menu. Corbett's is absolutely one of the city's top eateries.

As a partial "thread hi-jack", where can you find commercially-sold venison in this area ? I'd rather not go for the "road-kill" variety of deer processing.

I have heard that the reason venison is so rarely seen is that it is illegal to sell commercially hunted meat and that deer do poorly in captivity. Anyone know for sure about this?
