Farmer's Markets

by Pete O » Tue Dec 08, 2009 1:52 pm

Te talk about cash and farmer's markets got me dreaming about going to a farmers market. When we lived in Lexington, there was a GREAT farmers market downtown ... it took up two block and was jam packed every Saturday. The "peach ladies" were my favorite. They had a guy that would drive to South Carolina and pick peaches from the orchard trees and have them in Lexington on Satruday Morning. It was always my first stop. Since moving to Louisville, we haven't really found a farmers market (but haven't looked real hard). Which are your favorites? Why?

I know it is the wrong time of year, but if I start asking know I might be prepared by Spring :-)

I'll let others say why they prefer one market over another, but I'm incredulous that you haven't found any farmer's markets.

a general list and map:

and a specific list of 26 farmer's markets:

It's not that I haven't found any. I have seen the listings for them, I just haven't been to any. With 4 kids, my Saturday mornings are consumed with cheerios and cartoons.

You don't have to wait til spring! The way I get it, the Bardstown Rd farmer's market is willing to post up through the year. I guess the vendors have thriving indoor crops? And of course there's a lot more than vegetables. As far as favorites, I haven't been to all of them, but I have an itchy penchant for the Beargrass market (which IS closed for the season) on Shelbyville Rd across from "the Old Sears Bldg" known more to me as the Big Lots block. It's like a carnival, but I know there are others worth visiting. I definitely like the Bardstown Rd one because it's close to home and has all the goods.

My favorites are:

1. Bardstown Rd Farmer's Market (at Bardstown Rd and Deer Park Ave). Great produce, great omelets, great flowers from Perennial Favorites. When we go to this market we go for breakfast and produce.

2. Beargrass Creek (st. matthews) more of a carnival atmosphere. They sell a lot more than just produce and meat.

3. Temple Farmer's Market (42 and Lime Kiln Lane) This is where I go during the week (Mondays and Thursdays 3pm-7pm) when I need to grab some fruit and veggies. No frills, but a couple of times a year they have cooking demos by Sullivan students who make a lot of great food to taste. Perennial Favorites flowers are also there.

All of these markets are very child friendly. We have 2 year old twins who love going to the famer's market. I believe I've even seen face painting at Beargrass Creek. These are only a few of the great markets Louisville has to offer.

Jackie, in the dead of winter, only the meat vendors were there. We did go at the end of November, and Field Day Farms and a few others were there with lettuces and a few other veggies - we hadn't had a hard frost yet. From now until spring, though, I expect it will be mostly meat.

We live almost exactly halfway between Bardstown and Beargrass and love them both, but we tend to go to Beargrass more often during its shorter season because it's bigger, has a greater variety, and it's easy to park.
