Hero's New York Pizza Pub..more than N.Y. Pie

by Sara Boyle » Fri Jun 08, 2007 12:22 pm

First timer posting here.

After a long evening of Little League baseball playoff games and hungrier than a shark, I decided to call up a new establishment to my neighborhood for some late eats. There were 6 starving people, 4 adults and 2 kids, my bottomless-pit sons.

They boys wanted pizza and the adults wanted sandwiches. So one pizza of pepperoni, green pepper and black olives, medium of course. Us grown-ups had fish sandwiches. We figured Italian heros were probably a specialty so we went for someting a little different for a Italian Pizza Place Well, was I suprised at the sandwiches. Foot-long soft and fresh bread. 3 pieces of lightly breaded fish portions, depending on the size, fresh crisp green lettuce, tomato, onion and optional mayo or tartar. About $8 and a large bag of fries for another $1.

The pizza went away quicker than a Saturn rocket headed to the moon. Got one bite. Very New York and ingredients were fresh and just the right amount of cheese. Asked my husband, who by the way is from the New England area, and he was smitten to say the least. He raved after that. From what I understand, there are some new menu items coming soon.

I had wondered where my significant other had picked up a very large pizza one night. I mean the box had to be 2 1/2 feet across. He explained the pizza in the east coast comes that way. But the crust was such that he said there was no need to fold it, although it is fun to eat it that way sometimes. That night my 12 yr. old ate 6 slices of the large pizza. Yikes!!

I really like Hero's. Family freindly, really good food, a bar with happy hour and open late, 1AM Fridays & Saturdays. Parking is good too. Spaces in front, out back and along Watterson trail.

Heros location

For those not familiar with where this is .. J-town close to Taylorsville Rd on Watterson Trail. In an old building across from El Nopal.

Parking .. Note that the parking lot next to El Nopal is not theirs, but a public lot owned by J-town.

Have been wanting to try this place, but the lady of house is gluten intolerant and therefore usually finds nothing she can eat at a place like this. Also have two grandsons (one a teenager) that aren't pizza fans. Go figure.

Robin gave the place a good revue.

I checked them out today. Got a slice (2.50) and a side salad (3.50) that made a great meal. I love the option of by the slice because I'll go by myself in a second if I get the craving. The salad was very good, fresh, plenty of toppings(including banana peppers, onions, olives, tomato, etc) and a very nice size. I liked the slice also, simple but good, good enough to get another which was more than I needed, lol. So with a diet, it was about $10. Oh, nice comfy place to.

I'll go back.

The slices of pizza were pretty big. My daughters split one, and my husband bought two for himself. We hit happy hour, too.

I had a hot Italian sandwich that was really good. Not crappy like that tiny piece of nothing I got at the Salty Dog Cafe in Hilton Head last week.

If you can fold a slice in half, and hold it upside down, and oil drips out....
it is authentic NY pizza! I thought it was great, I give it a ten.

Hey Steve,

Thought you may want to know that their menu has way more than one imagines. Great Sandwiches, like the fish, or salads. I think your boys would definitly enjoy the meatball sub. Hey ya never know. If you do go, gotta try the Fried Dill Pickle Spears and the Wings..Hero's Style.

given the waist sizes round these parts I don't think too many folks would understand or care about that statement

Brian,

Although I appreciate your comment, and even see some humor in it, I was really speaking to the frequent dining out and taking a bite, (pun intended), out of a budget refering to the quote. I probably should have been definitive. Also, I'm the last one to point fingers as I can stand to drop some over indulgence myself, double digit numbers. Hey, some day. Treadmill still works and so does the Ab Lounger.

I really like the quote, even if your in good shape you need to indulge every now and then. And trust me, I'm over my ideal weight by about 20+ pounds myself   :?

Where in J-town is it? A friend of mine is from Long Island and is craving some pizza and subs from home! Would love to try it.

Amy, it's at 10509 Watterson Trail, in the little row of old buildings just off Taylorsville Road in the old J'town town square.

Here's my review that ran in The Voice-Tribune and on LouisvilleHotBytes.

Sara ... Thanks for the thought. Gluten intolerant means you can't eat wheat based stuff. Means that the lady can't eat "great sandwiches" and probably the wings (breaded) or the fried pickles (breaded).

Steve, I am so sorry that I spaced out on the definition of gluten.

That whole .43$ thing is really strange. :o

I still like them, and convenient too. J-town resident who hates to drive.

Maybe my hubby & I and our boys will run into you all there sometime.

Being a transplanted Long Island girl, I was skeptical (to say the least) about a NY style pizzeria opening in my adopted hometown. I sent hubby in first for a lunch tasting (he is a NY'er too) and asked him to report back to me. When he called me from Hero's and asked me to forward all of his mail there, I knew it was golden! :D

He was so impressed, that later that same evening, we rounded up a small group and headed back for a late dinner. Finally our L'ville friends understand what we mean by REAL New York pizza! From the crust being perfect for folding, to the teeny bit of oil that drips off the end, it was pure heaven. We have yet to venture past the large pie with meatball and pepperoni, but my husband has his eye on a white pizza before this weekend is through.
