Peking Duck

by JustinHammond » Sun Dec 06, 2009 7:10 pm

Is there any place in Louisville that does a good Peking Duck?

It's been awhile, but House of Hunan had a nice offering a couple of years ago.

Justin, althogh I don't believe it is on the menu I would imagine the chef at Red Pepper could do a Peking Duck dinner for you with a couple days notice.

More than a couple, I'm afraid, TP. House of Hunan was replaced by Bonsai, which moved over to become Sakai Blue. Of course, all these places were in the place where Victoria Station used to be. ;) I think the building is a doctor's office or insurance company or something now.

Geez, where did that name come from? I actually was thinking of Oriental House (isn't that the right name for the decades old place on Shelbyville Road?).

I don't know if this qualifies as Peking Duck, but the lady who is apparently the owner of Red Pepper suggested I try this (off-menu) dish, and I've have it several times. They can't always do it, though. It basically consists of sliced duck, steamed pancakes, plum sauce and what I thought were shredded cucumbers but may actually be scallions. Ocasionally they have substituted flour tortillas for the pancakes.

Ah, got it! Yes, Oriental House, Shelbyville Road just out from Fairmeade. It's one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Louisville, dating back to the '40s (?) ... I think it was owned by the same family as the long-lived House of Chen in Shively, which closed a few years ago, and may have pre-dated Hoe Kow, which came to Bowman Field shortly after WWII.

Oriental House, by the way, was purchased by a young couple from Hong Kong a few years ago, and while they retained the "traditional" Chinese-American menu, they've also got an excellent authentic menu available in English now. I'd put them up close to Red Pepper and Jasmine among the city's top spots for "real" Chinese, but just make sure you get the Chinese menu. ;)

Oriental House and Hoe Kow certainly go back to my earliest childhood memories. Hoe Kow was never the same when they made that move to Middletown. I forget where they where after Bowman Field (there was a cheap Italian place in that location prior to Le Relais) but before Middletown.

Oriental House is an insane bargain for great eats on the cheap.

I may be wrong, Mark, but I don't think there was an in-between. They built a really nice property at Shelbyville Road and Evergreen in the middle of Middletown and moved right out there, unless memory fails me. A Walgreen's is there now ... the "old" Hoe Kow building is gone.

I remember the Italian place that succeeded Hoe Kow ... it was an all-you-can-eat pasta bar with serve-yourself bowls of various pastas and sauces so you could mix and match. That was sometime in the '80s - I'm pretty sure it was during my tenure as Louisville Times critic, as was the opening of Le Relais (around 1986, maybe?)

Organization of Chinese Americans

I came across this site when searching for Peking Duck. It has some pretty funny reviews of the Asian restaurants in Louisville. It also gives a shout out to HotBytes.

Example:

Asiatique
Successful upscale restaurant in another Yuppies gathering area. Great
presentation on their dishes. Menu has a mix of Asia and European. Drive your
best car here.

Yeah, this is both a humorous and worthwhile site. We've been in touch with the OCA for ages and share information ... there's a link to their site from our HotLinks page. :)

An old joke....Customer asks chef at local Chinese establishment ,"Why do you need 24 hours notice for Peking Duck"
Chinese chef replies " Duck very expensive, must pull from freezer night before" :D
