Downtown Hotel Dining

by Ron Johnson » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:05 am

I am trying to make a decision on where to have dinner at a downtown hotel. I was dead-set on Proof, but I was also thinking about someplace with a little more holiday atmosphere like the Oakroom at the Seelbach. I have not heard anything about the food at the Oakroom in a while. Has anyone been lately?

We had dinner at the Oakroom a few weeks ago, and every single bite of everything we ate was outstanding. It was really a memorable meal. Service was attentive though a bit slow, which only bugged us as we had a play to get to (and we let them know when we sat about it). Had we not had to be somewhere, everything would have been fine.

You might also consider the English Grill at the Brown Hotel. It's been a little over a year since we've eaten there, but it and the prior meal two years before that were both excellent.

That said, Proof is great, of course, though I agree with you that it's not the most Christmas-y feeling place.

We're also BIG fans of Rivue at the Galt House.

Gerhardt is sort of back, but in kind of an executive-supervisory role. I think you'll find him still spending most of his time at Limestone. I get varying reports from insiders as to just how extensive Jim's role is at the Oakroom and how much his name is being used as a draw while staff does the heavy lifting. No offense meant to Jim by this - I admire him and love his cooking. But don't be surprised if you're at the Oakroom on any given evening and he's not there in person to come out and shake your hand.

I took a group to the English Grill for Thanksgiving and was not impressed. But, it was Thanksgiving and not the same as a regular dining evening......I guess.

The Brown recently hosted us for a progressive beer dinner, and everything in the English Grill was top notch and cooked perfectly.

Another small possible consideration, Ron. The Seelbach is renovating its lobby. While I'm sure the end result is going to be spectacular, right now it's badly damaging to the atmosphere of the place. When we went in for lunch at Otto's the other day, we found the lobby crammed with heavy equipment, yellow keep-out tape, tarps draped over the grand staircase, and a sheet over part of the registration desk. No holiday decor that I could see (although it's still early), and it felt like the heat in the lobby was turned off.

I understand they're restoring the old original skylight above the lobby, and when it's done it should be spectacular. But if you're looking for atmosphere, it would take the edge off the experience for me to have to negotiate that construction on my way to the Oakroom. Just a thought ...

Didn't they just do a redex in the not so distant past, or is my memory in time warp?

That's what I was thinking. We ate at the Oakroom in November, and the lobby was very different than it was when we had our reception there 2 years ago. The new skylight was in as well. Have they started more renovation since?
