Best falafel gyros EVER at AJ's in Highlander Pointe

by Jackie R. » Wed Dec 02, 2009 8:54 pm

Now I know what the fuss is all about. And I know it may seem that Allison has had enough attention on LHB lately, but I happened to be in their Southern Indiana shopping center today and I'm so glad I went in and can not resist this post. They have the most unique falafel I've ever had - it wasn't green or grainy, but honest chunky mashed chickpeas rolled into little balls and fried perfectly, with the most eatable packaging and perfect toppings (do you use the real Greek yogurt, Allison? Seems so.). I can't wait to go back for something else. It'll be worth the trip. What an extensive menu, too. I love the idea of a bacon and hummus gyro.

Jackie, It was nice to meet you yesterday, and thank you very much for your kind words. With all the positive response from fellow hotbyters, and from all our other customers, I am left wondering why it is that our takings have gone down so drastically. Is it the time of the Year?, is it the economy? Is it the weather? Is it the fact that we have no liquor license?. I don't know, all I do know is that we are really really struggling. Anyone who is contemplating a visit, I urge you to do so. Every little bit helps. I do not want to have to call it a day after only six months. We have to hang in here and see at least a year to see infact if it is a Winter slump or not.

We are having our second English Roast Lunch this Sunday. Reservations still open.

Thanks Annemarie. I just hope it picks up in the Spring.

Allison,
Is the menu at the cafe just as listed on your web page? Looks more limited than the "to go" site? No philly cheeseteak or other sandwiches? If not maybe that variety would help at the Cafe.

We have been to the roadside place and it's very good. I live in East Louisville but have been wanting to come over to the new place. I've told the two people in my office that live in Indiana and they knew you were open.

I'm sure those fixed expenses are much higher at the Cafe. Hopefully, with spring things will pick up.

Good Luck.

Brian, when you go onto the web site. Click on AjsGyro Cafe Menu. The greek stuff comes up first. At the top it says AJS Gyro Cafe menu continued. That is where you will find all the other good stuff, phillies, fish 'n' chips etc. The overheads are 6 times what we pay for Georgetown, and the takings are practically the same. So, go figure we are suffering!!

Ok, I see now. Well, I'm not familiar with your area too much. But you have to get the word out on a new business to the community.

Also, people are looking for deals. If you have sign outside to advertise a daily special that might help. Or if you could do a coupon in one of the coupon mailings or a small coupon in a local paper maybe that could get some people to try and they will come back after trying.

I hate to say it, Allison, but the location is difficult, it seems. You're not visible from inside the shopping center or from the main drag. I drove all over the parking lot looking for you, and only found you after uncovering every other square foot - I wouldn't give up because I wanted to try it so bad. Maybe some more signage away from the facade? Even a loud sandwich board on the sidewalk would help, I think.

Anyone up for an offline at AJ's? Maybe a weekend lunch?

I tried to stop in one day for lunch, sort of in a hurry, and couldn't locate AJ's. I really would have liked to stop in as I like the Gyros at the Georgetown location, but in the interest of time (mine) had to move on.

FWIW, a weekend lunch off-line sounds great, although free weekend time is limited for the next few weeks.

Alison, as a "Harrison County neighbor" I hope you hang in there. A tough time to be ITB.

We just got back from lunch at AJ's and we enjoyed it a lot. I had a Beef Gyro and my friend had the Pork Tenderloin, both were very good. I had the homemade chips with my sandwich (actually thought I would be getting bagged potato chips) and was pleased. I don't like these lots of places because they come out either undercooked and greasy and limp or burned. These were cooked perfectly, crispy but still blonde in color. The gyro was very good and very big. We will definitely visit again for lunch.

I wish I could, Dave, but I have to stick to weekends for lunch ventures. If you can do that, I'm down.

Sorry, Dave, but I have a standing reservation at Limestone's on the second Friday of every month.

Ms. R,
Maybe we could plan a Saturday in the new year. I'm going Friday anyway. It "may" be a ten minute drive from Bank Street Brewhouse.
