Gigi's Cupcakes now open

by Dan Thomas » Wed Dec 02, 2009 1:05 pm

I just noticed this place the other day. It's located right next to Jason's Deli in the Hurstbourne Wal-Mart strip mall. Of course Colleen had to go because she loves all things cupcake. She had a sample of something and loved it. For $3.00 a pop or $2.75 each in dozens, I think that's pretty steep. If this place takes off, I'm convinced I'm in the wrong racket. I'll find a 1000 sq. feet somewhere with a couple of mixers and an oven and I'm in business!

I'd rather try it once for $3.00 and decide whether or not it's worth my time.

- They must be doing something right. There are 9 stores located throughout Tennessee; Texas; Kentucky; and Alabama.

That's a pretty standard price for specialty cupcakes. It's what I charge too. Mine are all creme filled.

looking at their website with the background of dozens of cupcakes in a row, I am reminded of Dunkin Donuts - not a 'everything is baked with love' cupcake shop. I'll stick with cake flour and our other specialty bakers.

All I want to know is if they taste good and are worth the price. Hardly something anyone is able to extract by looking at their display on the website.

~ Leah,

This is KINDA on the subject, but I've seen a few weddings with Cupcakes instead of a norm Wedding Cake. Is this type of thing on the rise?

 Surely that doesn't mean the same thing as "creme" does on non-dairy coffee whitener ...

Robin - I do make it here and it is shelf stable, but there's no actual cream in it. And no coffee whitener either. And no Cool Whip.

Kyle - I hope not. Making 200-300 cupcakes for a wedding is way more work than making one big cake. All those little buggers have to be decorated, yaknow. The cupcake "trend" rolls thru every four years. Third time I've seen it.

Well.....I actually TRIED one of thier cupcakes yesterday(Wedding Cake) and thought it was pretty darn tasty. After seeing the size of one of those things, I must recant my earlier statement of how much they charge. They were offering samples of the Southern Comfort and it was REALLY good as well. After I started thinking about how much dessert costs in a restaurant and what a regular bakery would charge for a simular item' I came to the conclusion that $3.00 isn't really too much at all. Also, they had coupons at the cash register for buy 3 get 1 free on your next visit. :D

We did a wedding a couple months ago, and a "giant cupcake" was used for the cake.

I felt so bad for the bride, because the icing just kept sliding off!
Finally they had to call the baker to come and fix it, but alas, it was too late the pictures had already been taken!

Sliding icing is one of the results of trans-fat free shortening. Seriously. The oil separates out of it after it's made up into icing.

I had to comment on this thread.

Gigi's is based out of Nashville and I live in Nashville at the moment going to school. When I was home for Thanksgiving break, I was so excited to see that Louisville was getting a Gigi's.

Gigi's has become a favorite of mine and it is quite popular, so I don't see it folding up quickly. I often notice people buying 6 of them at a time. $3.00 can be expensive for a cupcake but I think it is worth it. The cupcakes always taste fresh to me. They are heavy on the icing so icing-haters need not try. Some cupcakes are better than others; my favorite being Pink Lemonade which is a summer special.

Please vist Gigi's and look for Ashley. A Sullivian Grad. She makes the best desserts.

Took my three year old daughter yesterday for a treat and it was well worth the $3. Sampled the Lemon, and bought the pumpkin. Those cupcakes are very big and filling with great taste. Definitely worth a stop!

As big as this site is on indie-vs-chain...I would hope you all tend to lean towards The Cupcake Shoppe, in St. Matthews, they are 100% local, and will do whatever you ask of them regarding your cupcakes...

I go where the food is good and service is solid. IF it happens to be a chain, then so be it. Hate me now.
