Beer Question - Growlers

by Pete O » Wed Nov 25, 2009 2:23 pm

Okay, beer experts ... what is the life span of beer in a growler? I like the concept of the growler, but I am the only one in the house that drinks beer, and I MAYBE have 4-5 beers/week. I am afraid it will go flat and such before I have time to drink it. Is this the case?

Thanks,
-Pete

A growler works just like a two liter of soda. As you drink the soda the carbonation comes out of suspension to fill the empty space and the liquid goes flat. There are only four pints in a growler. If you drank two pints the first opening, tightly resealed the cap and didn't finish or reopen for a few days, you'd see a small lose of carbonation but certainly it would not be flat.

The key to proper growler usage is:
There are only four pints, do not open until you are ready to drink four beers or as we call it, lunch.
Promptly rinse the growler and lid with warm water, allow to drain and air dry.
Always take the lid with you at refill time.

I think maybe you just solved your own problem here Pete-O...You definitely need to kick start the ol' consumption meter. I'm thinking we get you in a training regimen and we could have you up to ohhhh 20 beers a week in no time. Bingo, no more problem with flat beer.

Oh, and I'm laughing because it's the last day of the work week and I'm happy. Several days of relaxation are in order.

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.
