Growlers of Beer at Whole Foods

by Eliza W » Tue Nov 24, 2009 5:05 pm

I don't recall if it has been mentioned, but Whole Foods is now selling growlers of several beers, many of them local. I took home a growler of NABC Hoptimus to give to our house guests who are coming in tomorrow. There were a couple of other locals; sorry I don't have a full list.

I'm told you can drink beer as you browse the aisles. It makes me both thirsty and hungry just thinking about it.

Is Whole Foods open on Thanksgiving? I have 2 dinners to go to, taking some hoptimus to the 2nd one sounds like a great idea to me.

True, but I would think an old Leftie like you would have some of the same problems I do with Whole Foods' executive suite, including specifically the CEO's virulent anti-labor policies and his more recent shot at health-care reform. :P

When you are making money I guess it can be hard to stick to your core values. I guess the beauty of capitalism?

Not to say I know anyone's values and I definitely am not condemning NABC for having their beer available at Whole Foods. If he could sell his beer at Wal Mart I wouldn't blame him for that either (an BBC does by the way).

You cannot agree with everyone and you have to feed your family within the system that we have. Just some of my thoughts.

Even the OLD CJ was not to union friendly. An expansion of Standard Gravure was in Tennessee because of cheaper labor and "right to work law". It could easily have benefited Louisville, but it would have been union but the Binghams did not want the union.

You don't know the half of it. A bunch of us tried to organize the news room under The Newspaper Guild to provide us collective-bargaining rights against Gannett. The Binghams called in Gannett operatives to do everything they could - legal or otherwise - to block the action BEFORE the sale. It was not the family's finest hour.

Not wanting to restart that debate, but he didnt take a shot at health-care reform, he proposed health-care reform. It was just different (and in my opinion, much better). How that makes him anti-reform I dont understand.

Yeah, let's not hijack Roger's thread. We're just going to have to agree to disagree on the value of Mackey's "reform" proposal. I'm just expressing my own reasons for being turned off by Whole Foods anyway, not discouraging anyone else from shopping there.

I never intended to go "there" at all, at least in the sense of implying anything other than my desire to drink while I shop for food. Lotsa Pasta needs to have a couple draft lines and a community cup, and I can spend more money there than I already do.

Hey, that'll work! We'll have to get them a beer license, though ...

Is the cafe side at Lotsa Pasta a different set-up entirely? I thought I saw beer in there last time we passed through.

We're quite excited to have beer available at Whole Foods now. It's my intention to have a constant rotation of beers, many of which will be local gems. Roger is right, you can grab a glass of beer (between $3-4) before you head out to shop--makes it a little more interesting. Here's the current lineup we have available.

NABC Hoptimus
BBC Scotch Ale
Upland Barrel-Aged Winter Warmer
Kentucky Bourbon Ale
Schlafly Coffee Stout
New Holland Cabin Fever
Stone Arrogant Bastard
Bells Christmas Ale
Great Lakes Christmas Ale
Great Divide Hibernation Ale

to be tapped next...

Left Hand Fade to Black
Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald
BBC Heine Bros. Coffee Stout
Clipper City Loose Cannon IPA

These are available for 64oz fills or 32oz pours. Feel free to drop by and ask any questions.
Cheers,
