Jasmine Chinese - Expansion

by David Sanders » Mon Nov 23, 2009 10:12 pm

Jasmine Chinese, Shelbyville Road, Lake Forest, has expanded. They have taken over the gift shop-florist that was next door to their original location. More tables and booths, with at least one small private room. Also a bar as you come in, but while we were there, on a Monday night, no one was at the bar, it was used basically as the carry-out pick-up area.

Jasmine has always had an extensive menu, including authentic Chinese dishes. But I believe that the menu has also been expanded. I brought home a carry-out menu and unfortunately it does not have all the dishes listed on the dine-in menu. I am not sure if those items are not available for carry-out. For example, I noticed on the dine-in menu the spicy beef tendon mentioned in a Red Pepper thread. But it is not on the carry-out menu. Sauteed Pork Kidney, Hot & Spicy Intestines, Pola Fish and other Szechuan Style Specialties are on both menus. Of course the standards are also listed: Kung Poa Chicken, Mongolian Pork, Hot & Spicy Beef, etc.

For some reason, on a Monday night, they were slammed. That's a good thing, but service was a little frantic. About an hour into our meal we noticed several new "servers" who they had obviously called in from home; relatives in casual dress helping out.

Last but not least despite some minor service hiccups, the dishes were excellent. Red Pepper on Upper Brownsboro Road gets more play on this site, but for us, living in Jeffersontown, Jasmine is closer, and just as good. Out Taylorsville Road, Gene Snyder, and you are there, only eight miles. If you are ever outside the Watterson Wall, give them a try.

My wife and I had lunch at Jasmine this afternoon. She had the Cumin Beef and I had Claypot Eggplant. We were both very pleased. The menu is extensive and we took a lot of time consulting with the young waitress before our selections. The place also looks nice inside--nice enough for our lunch to qualify as a "date." The only disappointment was the "asian salad," which was nothing more than iceburg lettuce with an asian dressing. Otherwise, it was refreshing to have such nice Chinese selections to choose from and we will certainly return.

Is this on the menu in addition to, or in place of, the traditional West China cumin lamb, James? I really liked Jasmine in its first incarnation, and I would be sorry to see them start doing things like dropping less familiar meats from the menu.

Robin,
I'm almost sure lamb was initially suggested--my wife declined opting for the more familiar beef. In any case, there were a number of lamb dishes. And as I stated earlier, we needed some time to navigate the extensive, enticing menu. I just can't believe it took me so long to finally dine there.

My first visit to Jasmine since the expansion, and I echo Marty's months-old comment on service. Exceptionally polite but hit-and-miss. Timing was terrible, with no food for about fifteen minutes, followed by all one entree, then appetizers, then another entree. Turns out the two of us had six dishes on the table at one time. However, the results were really quite good - definitely an exceptional Asian food experience.
